Ad challenge

So the other day I was talking about that Lever ad, and I thought I'd show you another one of my favorites. This Ellen one is part of the "My life. My card" series by American Express, which features some great photos along with a questionnaire that the spokesperson has answered. Really, the Kate Winslet ad is my favorite, but of course the moment I went looking for it I couldn't find it (the whole ad, that is.) I did manage to find this photo from the ad on one of her fan sites, (although I have to admit I felt really weird lurking on a Kate Winslet fan site! But it's all for you, my dear readers, right??!)

SO ANYWAY, on Monday I was flippin' through an old issue of Entertainment Weekly (I think it was for the week of Dec 26th?) and I discovered a 6-page series of ads for the campaign. But even better than that was the fact that the last page of the series contained a blank questionnaire. Which I immediately ripped out to use for a scrapbook page, OF COURSE!

Instead of keeping the idea to myself, I thought I'd issue a challenge of sorts to you scrappers out there. There are lots of ways you can use an ad, and I'll share a few of my ideas here...

For example, you can take inspiration from the photo...
(The AmEx ones were taken by Annie Leibovitz, by the way, and I asked Mark (who can do all things) to imitate the high-contrast, grainy appearance of the photo.)

Or you could use the questionnaire as a series of journaling prompts (heck, if you don't want to scrap 'em, just use them as your blog entry for the day:

Here's the list:
My name
childhood ambition
fondest memory
soudtrack
retreat
wildest dream
proudest moment
biggest challenge
alarm clock
perfect day
first job
indulgence
last purchase
favorite movie
inspiration
My life
My card (okay, you can skip that one)

So tell me, how would you interpret this ad? By all means, please don't let my ideas hinder your creativity! If you create a layout and post it, send me a link!

Oh, and if you're interested in my interpretation, you can view it here.

Seriously, Joanna... you are so fancy. And you look for inspiration everywhere you go. Sadly, I'm only looking for kleenex... as of late. Maybe I'll try your challenge when I can not sneeze on my photo for a few moments.

Thanks for the idea. I took your challenge. I don't have time to do a layout right nowbut I wrote an idea of what I would do and probably will do after tax/audit season is over.

Just found your blog the other day. You have the most amazing photos on here... You rock! And this challenge is fabulous, Joanna, as is your page! I'm so tempted to do this, but how the heck do I get Annie Leibowitz to come to my house?! I'll work on getting a pic and then I'm doing this. Love it!

Saw another version of that ad in Tennis magazine with a Williams Sister and Andy Roddick...it was GREAT...I'm gonna go tear it out! For one thing the inspriation is awesome...for another, the ads are a sign of our times and a great way to document the feel of our time for future generations...

    FAB idea!

About Us
Hi! I'm Joanna, author of this journal. My husband Mark and I are photographers in Asheville, North Carolina. Most recently we collaborated on a 12 week beginner photography course, the contents of which you can find
    • here.
    • The name of our company, Tuesday's Frog, is based on an almost wordless children's book about frogs that go flying on lily pads one night. We love it because it tells a story in pictures. Cole & Harper are our children, and frequent (though not always willing) photography subjects. So here you'll find not only the story of our lives, but of those we've photographed as well. We'd love to tell your story, too!
