on the front porch

We're just chillin' on the front porch today and thought you might like to join us.

How was your weekend?
It was our first weekend in a while where we didn't have a wedding, so we got quite a lot accomplished around the house. We're prepping for the "great basement renovation" (which isn't really that great, but it just sounds better that way.) In a couple of weeks we'll be ripping up the allergy-inducing carpet and putting in wood flooring, wiring speakers, adding some French doors, and officially making the 4th bedroom my scrapbook room (I'm excited about that part!) So on Saturday we sorted through the storage room, threw out a bunch of stuff, and took a trip to Goodwill in anticipation of that coming event.

We also rearranged all 3 of our bedrooms upstairs, and (drum roll, please) took down the crib in Harper's room. Her new bed has been in place for a few months, coexisting with the crib, just so we could get her used to the new arrangement. Now that the crib is gone she is delighted with the play space on the floor in her room, as well as her newfound freedom at naptime. Which is to say that naptime takes a loooooot longer than it used to. We read a book or two and then I explain to her that she needs to stay in bed and take a nap. And then I make several more trips back upstairs to remind her she's supposed to be sleeping whenever I hear her little feet tap, tapping on the floor. (Yesterday she took the time to remove all of her clothing from the drawers it was in and placed it all in a different set of drawers.) Then finally, finally she falls asleep, and we have to go wake her up so that she doesn't sleep through dinner. Obviously, it's a work in progress right now!

On Sunday we attended the installation for our new pastor at church. Sooo happy to have a full-time pastor back on staff and leading our congregation. The kids did miraculously well during the two-hour service and we rewarded them with a little time at the park followed by the oh-so-fun trip to the grocery store (but at least they got to ride in the cart that looks like a car.) During naptime I went out and did a little "just for fun" shopping for myself.

Which brings us to Monday and hanging out on the porch until the noontime sun drives us inside. This is our last "free" week before Coley starts preschool. We have his "meet the teacher" day on Friday, and he's feeling quite a bit of anxiety about the whole thing. Which explains why I found the new school clothes I bought him by the side of the toilet in the kids' bathroom. But since he's wearing one of those new shirts in the photo above I think he's coming around to the whole idea. I know he's going to have a lot of fun, make new friends, and learn so much this year. We'll see how next week goes (for him and for me!)

So that's a little Monday update from us...how 'bout you?

Hey Joanna, It was the weekend to clean I think because I did the same thing. Anyway, I just thought I would let you know about a find I ran across on Friday. Big Lots in Asheville had three big stacks of patterned paper by American Crafts for $2 each. I don't know if you use any of their paper, but thought I would let you know in case you did. It was on the left side of the store around aisle 4 on the right side bottom shelf. Hope all of your new downstairs project turns out well!

I always start naptime by saying, "if you takea good nap you can have _________" and it's usually something small. You can read a special book, watch some TV, eat a popcicle...
Anyway, it does seem to work... and boy are we all happier because of it. :)

He looks so much older in that great picture!
He'll come around to preschool. It may take a few tears at first, by you *and* Cole, but you'll both be fine :)

Wow, you've been busy! I tell ya, every time I read your stories about Harper, I'm reminded of my daughter at that age. She's still little (4) but I can remember the transition from crib to bed, and she would transfer clothes to different drawers in her dresser almost every day. And was so proud.:) Anyway, our Monday was spent hanging out here because we were having carpet installed in our basement, and waiting around for the Kitchen Aid repair man, because our oven decided to quit working. We got both of them taken care of, so now we're off to gymnastics this morning. Happy Tuesday!

We've been packing, packing and packing some more. FUN stuff! It will be over soon!
Did a couple photo shoots too - those were fun!
I love your stories about your kids. I have a friend whose daughter was 2 in May and they recently put her in a bed and she said the first few days there was a lot of running around but now the little turkey will NOT get out of bed instead she just screams and screams for them until they come and get her. LOL!
I hope you are enjoying a wonderful week!

My daughter also starts junior kindergarten (might as well call it preschool since she is 4)and she is SOOOOO excited! She's been practising wearing the backpack :) It makes me a little sad, but I'm also proud that she wants to take this step forward and is so anxious to learn. I am sure that Cole with be fine once he gets there and makes some new friends.

You're so brave! We moved Elizabeth into a big girl bed when she had just turned two, but with Stewart we feel that we need to keep him contained as much as possible! LOL!

About Us
Hi! I'm Joanna, author of this journal. My husband Mark and I are photographers in Asheville, North Carolina. Most recently we collaborated on a 12 week beginner photography course, the contents of which you can find
    • here.
    • The name of our company, Tuesday's Frog, is based on an almost wordless children's book about frogs that go flying on lily pads one night. We love it because it tells a story in pictures. Cole & Harper are our children, and frequent (though not always willing) photography subjects. So here you'll find not only the story of our lives, but of those we've photographed as well. We'd love to tell your story, too!
