12 Weeks to Better Photos
Mark and I are working on an online course for 2 peas that will start in January -- the title of the course is 12 Weeks to Better Photos, and the course will include a weekly topic, a discussion thread on the photography board, a downloadable PDF so you can print out all of the information, and weekly challenges associated with each topic.

SO, I wanted to ask for your help. Do you have suggestions for topics or questions for us? We already have a pretty firm outline but I'm curious about the things that you want to know. We're going to incorporate your questions into a Q&A section on each PDF so that everyone can benefit from the questions you ask.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Personally, I need help understanding f-stops and when to use them (and how!!). I bought the Understanding Exposure book and quickly realized that I can't learn by just reading...definitely need photos and specific how-to's. The more illustrations, the better. Hope that helps!

I would love to know how to set a camera for action shots, both indoor and outdoor. My camera does not have a preset action mode and the auto mode doesn't work for me in those situations. I have read and read but I am more of a hands on learner.

I am so excited about this class. Please be sure to tell us where to go to sign up.

I love my zoom lens but wonder when it is best to use my zoom or my wide angle lens. Also I would love to know about which digital SLR cameras you recommend and if you could use your lenses from you film SLR.

I just figured out how to use shutter priority on my Nikon D40x. So maybe a better explanation of all the settings and when you need to use them? What equipment is necessary for good pix. Like do i realy need a 50 mm lens, or a better flash? And why is that my pictures in the winter suck as compared to Spring and summer (I know natural light but what to do to make all my pictures turn out beautimous.) I'm sure whatever the topics would be fine. Oh, and how to shout indoor photos that aren't blown out by the flash. I took a lot of pictures at a wedding recently and the flash made everything look so funky.

I've got the lighting (usually) and the other technical stuff, but when it comes to framing, yeah, not so hot. If you aren't born with an innate sense of framing/composing, how can you learn it? I'd love five fail-proof tips ... or six or seven or whatever, just a checklist.

I would be interested in suggestions for unusual portraits - not just the everyday garden variety studio shots, but portraits that look candid and natural - portraits that look a lot like yours and Tara Whitneys. I would like ideas for how to set up the shoots, some props to use, what to look for in a background, how to place small groups and any other tips you can think of.

I try to shoot completely in manual, but I find it so difficult, especially when photographing children. Is there a cheat sheet or something pros use to determine aperature, etc.?

About Us
Hi! I'm Joanna, author of this journal. My husband Mark and I are photographers in Asheville, North Carolina. Most recently we collaborated on a 12 week beginner photography course, the contents of which you can find
    • here.
    • The name of our company, Tuesday's Frog, is based on an almost wordless children's book about frogs that go flying on lily pads one night. We love it because it tells a story in pictures. Cole & Harper are our children, and frequent (though not always willing) photography subjects. So here you'll find not only the story of our lives, but of those we've photographed as well. We'd love to tell your story, too!
