A very good day

Yesterday was a very good day. I'd even venture to say it was perfect. Not a win-a-million-bucks surreal kind of day, but just a great hang-around-the-house-in-your-pjs content sort of day. We built a fort in the living room. We played "fireman" -- a made up game where we take turns wearing the firefighter hat from Halloween and drive the firetruck (also known as Cole's bed) to McDonalds. (???) We ate fruits and vegetables for lunch. Cole and Harper took naps at the same time in the afternoon. I did laundry. I emptied and filled the dish washer. I worked out. Both the USPS and the UPS were kind enough to bring me packages (including new Heidi Swapp fuzzy rub-ons!). Someone posted a sweet ego-pampering thread about me online. I scrapped a layout. We had art class after naptime and explored the color green. I cooked dinner! Ha ha. Okay, I put the lasagna that Mark had prepared the day before into the oven so that it would be ready shortly after he arrived home from work. It was such a good day that I didn't want it to end, so I stayed up way too late checking out photos from CHA at scraptalk. I was finally on my way to the bedroom when Harper woke up crying, but that was okay, too, because technically it was after midnight, and I'd already had my perfect day.

PS. The photo of Harper crying was for the person who asked if she was always smiling. Never fear -- she certainly can get wound up sometimes!

PPS. During the aforementioned art time Cole was drawing a photo of me. When he got to the hair I asked him if my hair was straight or curly. He looked up for a bit and said, "messy." Gotta love him!

confessions
As a parent of two, I have come to realize that some of the things I did with the first child may now be coming back to haunt me...

Hmmmmm...notice any similarities there? The first and third photos are of Cole, and the pranks were parent-induced. But the photos of Harper depict some of the ways that Cole has chosen to express his affection for his sister. (But I didn't think they were supposed to be able to remember stuff before the age of 1!!!!)

Ad challenge

So the other day I was talking about that Lever ad, and I thought I'd show you another one of my favorites. This Ellen one is part of the "My life. My card" series by American Express, which features some great photos along with a questionnaire that the spokesperson has answered. Really, the Kate Winslet ad is my favorite, but of course the moment I went looking for it I couldn't find it (the whole ad, that is.) I did manage to find this photo from the ad on one of her fan sites, (although I have to admit I felt really weird lurking on a Kate Winslet fan site! But it's all for you, my dear readers, right??!)

SO ANYWAY, on Monday I was flippin' through an old issue of Entertainment Weekly (I think it was for the week of Dec 26th?) and I discovered a 6-page series of ads for the campaign. But even better than that was the fact that the last page of the series contained a blank questionnaire. Which I immediately ripped out to use for a scrapbook page, OF COURSE!

Instead of keeping the idea to myself, I thought I'd issue a challenge of sorts to you scrappers out there. There are lots of ways you can use an ad, and I'll share a few of my ideas here...

For example, you can take inspiration from the photo...
(The AmEx ones were taken by Annie Leibovitz, by the way, and I asked Mark (who can do all things) to imitate the high-contrast, grainy appearance of the photo.)

Or you could use the questionnaire as a series of journaling prompts (heck, if you don't want to scrap 'em, just use them as your blog entry for the day:

Here's the list:
My name
childhood ambition
fondest memory
soudtrack
retreat
wildest dream
proudest moment
biggest challenge
alarm clock
perfect day
first job
indulgence
last purchase
favorite movie
inspiration
My life
My card (okay, you can skip that one)

So tell me, how would you interpret this ad? By all means, please don't let my ideas hinder your creativity! If you create a layout and post it, send me a link!

Oh, and if you're interested in my interpretation, you can view it here.

the magic word
Cole is normally pretty good about saying "please" and "thank you" for his requests. The other evening he forgot, though, so I prompted him by asking for the "magic" word. He had this gleam in his eyes when he looked at me and responded with, "caaaaaaaandy." The word was stated with such reverence that Mark and I both burst out laughing.

Although that is NOT the word I was looking for, I can understand why he might have that impression. Candy certainly has been the impetus for successful potty training in this house, and sometimes the promise of a little mid-afternoon treat makes the process of going down for a nap smoother, too. So on that note, I present today's photo of the day...

...that's right, it's the first Necco hearts of the season...(you'd think for 69 cents I could get more than one pink one in the box, but alas, it was all alone, and therefore gets to be front and center in the photo!)

Not for the faint of feet
I'm always saving pages out of magazines that I want to use for inspiration later on. I tore out this Lever ad a while ago and said to Mark, "we need to try this after Harper is born."

Now that she's among us and old enough to sit with assistance, I located the ad again and said, "Let's try this!" But what we realized, after taking the photos and hearing some feedback, is that a baby chewing on someone's foot is sorta gross to look at, unless, like the Lever ad, it comes with the implication of super clean feet and good hygiene. So I'm not going to share the actual foot-chewing photos with you, though I will tell you that it was Mark's foot (sanitized, of course) and, for the sake of comedy, point out that Harper had just gotten her 2 teeth. (Ha ha ha! I'm still laughing about that -- "no, no, honey, don't worry, I'll take the photos.")

These don't have the same lighting as the ad or the completely white background, but I thought they were fun and captured the same sort of idea...

If they still gross you out, I apologize. : ) I just wanted to point out that sometimes it's nice to try something new (and by "try" I'm referring to photography, not feet!)
