| worst. patient. ever. |
Should she ever decide to become a doctor, she'll deserve every screaming child she gets. I took her to her 18-month appointment today and it's like preparing for battle. Seriously. The worst little patient ever.Labels: Harper |

| Yay for David Wiesner |
The 2007 Caldecott and Newberry awards were announced yesterday. David Wiesner's Flotsam is this year's winner.
He has a special place in our hearts, being the author/illustrator of Tuesday as well.

| at the stoplight |
We were waiting in a long line at a red light when Cole spotted the green right-turn arrow and said, "It's GREEN, people!" Mark thinks he should ride in the car a little less with me...Labels: a humorous life |

| puppies |
Have you met Harper's puppies? They are referred to by us as little puppy, middle puppy, and big puppy. Harper refers to them each as either "puppppy" or "baby." I don't know how she keeps track, but she does seem to alternate her attention between the three of them. I made the mistake of throwing middle puppy down the other morning because stuffed animals are not allowed at the breakfast table. Bad, bad mommy. Harper pushed her chair away from the table and refused to eat. (I don't think she realizes how traumatic it would be if any of the puppies had to be washed!) Harper loves real dogs, too, but unfortunately Cole is severely allergic to them. I can just hear the arguments we'll have over this issue in the future. The other day at Cracker Barrel we were unloading the kids from the van when a car pulled up beside us containing a couple and their dog. After spotting the dog, Harper leaned over and out of Mark's arms in order to give the lady a hug....because she owned a dog.

| our bedroom |
So, with the bed finally constructed, I can show you our bedroom!

As I said before, the room design was based around a swatch of fabric, shown on the large pillowcases in photo #2.

I was a little scared of the color at first but I really like how the teal/brown together have such a calming effect on the room.
On one of the side walls are these 3 silk prints that Mark had framed after his trip to Japan several years ago. They match perfectly!

On our dresser are these digital silhouettes I made of the kids using Photoshop. Not quite the same as the way they used to make them, but I like how they turned out.

Also, I tried to get a better photo of the floors to show you.
You can still see the lines where each of the floorboards come together, and you can see some of the details in the wood as well when you walk over them. We used a floor enamel from Sherwin Williams to coat the floors, and it's supposed to be very durable. So far so good, anyway! I orginally saw the idea in a magazine and showed it to Mark, who promptly responding with "you're crazy!" But the good thing about him is he knows I'm crazy AND he still goes along with my ideas....occasionally. ; ) Here's a link I found on Real Simple while researching the floors online, in case you're interested...
Happy Friday!Labels: our house |

| Harper vs. the snow |
This one is much more pragmatic about the snow. It's cold. My feet are wet. I'm ready to go inside, Mommy. Can't you just see it all in this look?
It snowed more yesterday afternoon while the kids were napping. There was still snow on the ground this morning, so we even went out and bought a sled...now that we have a little hill in the side yard that's perfect for it...Labels: Harper, winter |

| Christmas cards |

While I was typing yesterday's post I realized it was awfully quiet in the living room. When I ran in there to check on the kids I was delightfully suprised to see that they were innocently sitting and examining all of the Christmas cards we've received this year. They really like the mailbox where we store the cards, and Harper seems to prefer the ones with dogs and cats (so she can "woof" and "meow" at them) while Cole likes the ones featuring people dressed up in Halloween costumes. So, just so you know, your Christmas cards are getting lots of loving from our household. : )Labels: our house |

| finally, some house photos |
So basically, we moved in right before Christmas, and promptly decorated the house for the holidays in addition to installing appliances and setting up furniture. Probably not the greatest time in the world to move, but it was what it was. Here's the view from our front porch on one of our first nights...

The second photo was taken in our living room on Christmas Eve after Santa had been by to visit.

Here's a glimpse at our lovely new dining room table made by my brother-in-law, Paul. As you can tell, we don't have quite enough matching chairs yet for the table, but we'll work on that later.

Here's the crowd that was at our house for dinner on Christmas Day - Mark's parents, my parents, my brother Mark, my sister Kristina and her husband (and table maker) Paul, and Paul's mom, Margaret. Oh yes, and two uncooperative children... At this point we'd just finished pulling apart our crackers, which is a tradition that Paul and his mom (who are from South Africa) shared with us. Each cracker tube has a prize in the middle of it, which Cole quite enjoyed.

So then, the day AFTER Christmas, the work began. We took all the furniture down from the 3 bedrooms which make up the top level of the house and pulled up the carpets in each. The carpet wasn't bad, necessarily, but the previous owners had a cat and we have allergies and it just wasn't a good mix. This is what each of the rooms looked like when we moved in:

Then Mark and his dad put in unfinished hardwoods which were sanded and painted white. Yes, painted white. While they were doing this my mom, brother, and I painted the walls in each of the 3 rooms, and my Dad did other odd jobs, like put up the new mailbox, hang curtain rods, fetch tools, paint rollers, paint, etc.
So here's what Cole's room looks like now:

As well as "princess" Harper's:

I'd show you our room, too, but alas, the platform bed we ordered did not come with hardware so it's still a work in progress. But I will tell you that the whole room design was based on a swatch of fabric I found a few weeks ago...and thankfully, Mark just let me do whatever I wanted. heh!
So anyway, that's it for now, but I do have to say a big THANK YOU to all of our wonderful helpers! They thought they were just being invited for Christmas and it turned into a whole lot more work. Thank you, everyone!Labels: our house, winter |
