Memorial Day mayhem
So, the munchkins were a little mischeivous on Monday...partly because Mark wasn't home (his employers don't "believe" in Memorial Day) but mainly because I was distracted and not giving them my full attention as I worked on the Worst. Project. Ever. in the room adjacent to the kitchen. So, needless to say, they took FULL advantage of the lack of attention, and I got a little insight into the world of Cole & Harper. Besides the half a box of Cocoa Pebbles spilled on the floor (Cole) and the completely unrolled roll of toilet paper (Harper) and the brief haircut attempt on Harper (after snipping one lock from his own hair, Cole thought he would try his skills on H but thankfully her protesting drew my attention, as well as the following words "it's just a haircut, Harper!") and the 1/4 box of Fruity Cheerios spilled on the floor directly after we had just finished up vacuuming the Cocoa Pebbles (Harper), and the swiped-from-my-desk pack of post-it-notes stuck on walls throughout the house (both of them) as well as the fact that Cole decided to create a masterpiece out of Harper with red marker there was this:A birthday party for Cole's invisible friend Jocko.Complete with an egg slicer, streamers, party hats, animal plates, and an "ice cream cake."
Oh, how I laughed. I'm still laughing, which is why I share this day with you. Because I fully acknowledge it was my own fault for not paying better attention, and because I secretly admire their inventiveness. For the record, I did take time to enjoy a scoop of the ice cream cake, and I even wore a party hat, too.

Because of Monday's eventfullness, I was definitely prepared for the worst yesterday. So when they were playing up in Harper's room and it suddenly became very quiet, I ran up the stairs as quickly and quietly as I could, ready to catch them in the act...but alas, I only found them very innocently lounging on the floor on their blankets, each reading a book. Go figure. My kids can be good, too, I guess.

the sky is falling!
Not really. But if one were Harper's size and were rudely interrupted from her piano playing (banging) by a tree crashing to the ground (it was a "controlled" fall) then I think that you might indeed think the sky was falling. And you, too, would come running to mommy in the scrapbook room and say "scawy, mommy! twee scary!" But in reality, it's just that we had to say goodbye to three lovely trees this week which were way past their prime, or as the loggers said, "at the end of their lifecycle."
They took down the first tree on Tuesday, and it came down in one solid piece. Heaven help me, I'm glad I missed the actual fall, because I think it would have freaked me out like it did H.

This photo with Harper in the corner cracks me up.

The second tree came down yesterday, and we happened to have a very nice view of the commotion from our back deck. So (of course) I have photos. They even asked me to photograph them. hee! This particular tree had to be taken down piece by piece because there wasn't any room for it to fall. The whole process was pretty interesting -- we even had our lunch while we watched -- it's definitely a spectator sport if you ask me!
Here's crazy climber dude on his way up...
...from Harper's perspective...
...and in for the closeup.
Here are a few of the tree in progress - the roofline of our house is on the left...Too bad I didn't crop those better so that the tree was in the exact same spot...pretend I did.

As you might guess, there was a lot of sawdust involved.Cole and I were sneezing like crazy! But finally, the tree came down.Thank you, TimberTigerTree!

Hidden Treasure
The other day at Lowe's Cole pointed to an "X" that had been drawn on the floor and said with delight, "Mommy! I think there's hidden treasure under there!" No, we didn't dig up the floor right then and there, but his comment did get me thinking about our own "hidden treasure" that we unearthed a few months ago.

First, a little backstory: Back in 2002, mere hours after Cole entered our lives, my mom, dad, and Grandma arrived at the hospital to see their first grandchild/first great-grandchild (they left Minnesota when we called to tell them that I was in labor...a very long labor.) A few days after we arrived home from the hospital I asked everyone if they would like to record their voices on our computer while reading children's books to Cole (I figured this would be a great way for Cole to become familiar with their voices since we lived so far away from everyone.) To my delight they all agreed - even my siblings cooperated willingly! Unfortunately, after that initial idea on my part, the transfer of the audio files to CD fell on the backburner as we became consumed with being first-time parents. (So much does not get accomplished when exhaustion sets in.) Mark cleaned up the files and transferred them at one point, only for the set of CDs to be lost during our move to House 1 in 2004. We also lost Grandma to cancer in between that time, and so there was a lot of sorrow that was quite raw. ANYWAY, long story short...or long story long...Mark discovered the CDs again one day after we moved to this house. Back in February, while setting up his music collection downstairs, he put in a CD and there, crystal clear, was Grandma's voice, reading Make Way for Ducklings, and even quacking on occasion. It still made me cry, of course, but in a good way, because it was SO NICE to hear her voice again. So nice! It felt like she was in the room with us.

You know I'm all about capturing memories in photographs, but hearing her voice again was magical, too. I think it's especially precious to us because Grandma loved books. She was a kindergarten teacher, and after she retired she taught literacy to adults. I'm POSITIVE that every single one of her grandchildren remembers her reading to them, and I'm excited to think that each of her great-grandchildren (most of whom she didn't get to meet) can now hear her voice as well. So, dear friends & family of Grandma, to hear your own bedtime stories you just have to click on the links below and download the audio files (mp3s) to your computer:

to my husband

Thank you for asking me out on a date when I was 21.
Thank you for asking me to marry you when I was 22.
Thank you for marrying me when I was 23.
Thank you for encouraging me to quit my chosen career path when I was 24.
Thank you for having a baby with me when I was 25.
Thank you for supporting my scrapbooking accomplishments when I was 26.
Thank you for building us a house when I was 27.
Thank you for having another baby with me when I was 28.
Thank you for walking beside me on a new career path when I was 29.
Thank you for taking me swimming with dolphins the day I turned 30.
And for everything everyday, I thank you.

I have dreaded turning 30 since I was about...oh, probably 24. My friend Jen sent me an email this week that said "enjoy your last week in your 20s. heheh." My mom sent me dead flowers (not intentionally, but it was funny.) I think they know me too well! But looking over this roadmap of my 20s I'd have to say that I'm not ducking for cover anymore. Well, somedays I might waiver, but I think I just might hold my head up high today, proud to be 30. Happy for where I've been and where we're going, and so, so thankful for Mark by my side and two sweet children holding my hands. Happy to be me. Even with a new driver's license that claims I'm 30.

taking a walk
Today we took a walk.
I should really call it a stroll, with a lawn mower, a scooter, and lots of lolligaging.

We stopped to smell the mountain laurel...
...it's not really very smelly.

We transcribed our names in dirt.

We pondered how small we really are.

We played hug-the-harper (guess how much she likes that?!)

Then we ran back down the hill toward home.

Jason & Robin | 5.5.07 |
The Camp cafeteria was transformed into an cozy setting with soft lighting, wooden chairs, beautiful rhododendrons and other flowers, votive candles, and muslin draped across the ceiling.

The bride walked down with her father and her brother, and wore a ring (that her mother wore on her wedding day) in memory of her mother.

The ceremony was intimate...

...a little tearful...
...and oh-so-joyous.

I love how happy their pastor was for them!

After the ceremony we were able to whisk the newlyweds away for a few moments. The rain from earlier had stopped, leaving a perfectly tranquil lake and the most beautiful light we could ask for.I think the groom might be just a lil' bit smitten -- what do you think?
And then it was time to head back for their reception (shown on the right in this photo.)

rehearsal dinner, part 2
When Robin & Jason asked us to shoot their rehearsal dinner we realized it would be the perfect time to try a photobooth type setup. So we set up a white paper backdrop and managed to catch all but one of the guests as they were departing the dinner. Laughter and silliness prevailed (that could possibly have had something to do with the wine consumed at the dinner) and I think everyone enjoyed their private photo shoot. Plus, it helped us get to know the guests and familiarize ourselves with their personalities before the big day.

sweet strawberries
Guess what's back in season?
We arrived at the strawberry patch earrrrrrrly this morning. So early that we were the only ones there! Since we had the whole patch to ourselves, we made sure to take our time. We certainly aren't the most thorough or fastidious pickers, but as Cole said, "this is super fun, Mommy!"

Last year at the patch Harper was in the Baby Bjorn, so carrying her own basket was a very exciting experience for her. After we told her which ones to pick she did a pretty good job....

...that is, until Cole convinced her to taste one of the strawberries.
Then it was very much like the book Blueberries for Sal...
...with lots of pausing...
...and eating.
After we decided to divert the best strawberries to Cole's bucket we had more success, and now there are two buckets filled with sweet-smelling (and tasting) strawberries just waiting for us in the kitchen. (And one very sleepy, very full little girl napping upstairs.)

PS. you can find out about pick-your-own farms in your area here.

why we do what we do

A dad and his only daughter.
He'll be walking her down the aisle tomorrow.
He was quiet during the toasts.
Fairly reserved the whole evening.
But we caught him...
