baby Maisy

We met baby Maisy Paige today -- what an adorable little bundle of joy she is! So alert and did I mention adorable! She is steadily gaining weight (almost 4 lbs) and holding her temperature, so she should be moved from her isolette to an open crib either today or tomorrow.

She definitely knows her mama's voice already, too!

Birthday party

Another day, another birthday party.

This time the party was for Cole's invisible friend John, who, according to Cole the last time I inquired, was actually the featured skeleton on the back of the latest Bones book.

(Since they opted for strawberry yogurt instead of Frosties this time I guess you could say they're eating "light" in his honor.)

April & Craig | September 15
April and Craig were married at Pack Place in downtown Asheville. Pack Place is a collective of artistic endeavours -- there's a theatre, a children's health/science place, and an art museum among other things. (We saw an Ansel Adams exhibit there a few years ago that was awesome!) So the first thing we saw when we walked inside were these beautiful butterflies, decorated by children, streaming in from the window.

We were able to spend a good portion of the day with April & Craig, which involved observing the setup for the reception. Here's one of the table centerpieces.

After setting everything up, Mark headed out with Craig to a nearby hotel while I followed the girls back to their loft downtown.

A little pre-ceremony champagne...

Coincidentally, the boys were doing the very same thing!

We loved having the opportunity to take photos downtown! A bridal party must always stop traffic!

The ceremony took place in the courtyard beside Pack Place... so we were able to take a few gritty, urban sunset photos outside before it began.

ceremony & reception
The happy groom...

...and the nervous bride.

On their way down the aisle Craig leaned over and gave April a hug, which I thought was so sweet!

After the ceremony we took a few photos on the streets...

...then it was time for the party to begin...with dancing...

...and toasting, and laughing...

The dads have been getting a lot of attention in our wedding photos of late so I thought we'd showcase the moms this time: Here's Craig dancing with his mom...

...and April's mom, during the father/daughter dance.

I love the little smidge of cake on Craig's nose during the cake cutting.

Later that evening the couple departed amidst a little "ecofetti."

Craig and April, we hope that you had a wonderful time on your cruise! Thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your downtown celebration!

Sunday brunch
We had brunch yesterday with the lovely Gabby & Mike, who were in town for a wedding this past weekend. As you can probably tell from the photo below, Harper had a good time with Gaaahby (who diligently picked up every single crayon Harper threw on the floor) and Mike (a name considerably easier to pronounce than Gabby, apparently!) When Harper woke up from her afternoon nap she said, "Gaahby be right back!"

So, so happy to know that Mike & Gabby are expecting their own little one at the beginning of next year!
Thank you so much for brunch, guys! Please come back to Asheville soon!
PS. I can't believe I forgot to order some of those free-range eggs.

sheer brilliance
Obviously, if you know me well enough, you'll realize that the title is tongue-in-cheek.

So.
Do I always start out that way? Probably.
So. Today while taking Cole to school the weather report on the radio called for "overcast skies with periods of sunshine." Not bad, I think. We drop off Cole, run errands, hit the dry cleaners where they know us by name (love that!), stop at home, start a new book, check email. get mail. blah. blah. While looking online I discover that we have once again missed the peak monarch migration in our area, which happened a mere 2 evenings ago up on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

But why not just go up there to check, I think? There might be a few stragglers, after all, and overcast skies are usually good for taking photos. So I pack up Harper and ponder a picnic, which would be the good mom thing to do. Instead we swing by McDonalds, where they probably already could know us by name but thankfully don't rub it in our faces, and the lady hands over our bags and says, with force, "you have a good day." Not in a whimsical, la la la maybe you'll have a good day, but more like in a drill sergeant way. "Yes, ma'am."

ANYWAY...
We pick up Cole, who is immediately alerted to the fact that we're not going home when I turn left at the stoplight rather than right. He's excited about the possibility of seeing butterflies when I tell him that we're taking a drive along the parkway, but really more excited about the toy in his happy meal.

So.
I'm just going to blame this next little part on growing up a flatlander, but as you may or may not know, the thing about driving up a mountain is that you sometimes encounter different weather conditions than you would if you were in the valley. In our case, we quite literally drove into those overcast skies, in the form of heavy cloud cover. Which looks really pretty when you're gazing up at the mountains but is rather dense and a little hard to drive in when one is actually up on the mountain without guardrails on either side.

But never fear, this is an adventure! We continue on, the kids, oblivious to any of my agitation as they snack on their food and watch Charlotte's Web, and me, looking for mile markers to determine where we are, and which are VERY hard to see due to the fact that well, we pretty much can't see. Honestly, though, I'm making is sound worse than it is.

See for yourself -- go ahead, take a moment to enjoy the view.

What? You can't see it? Well here, maybe if you look over the sign (that would be me holding the camera over the sign.)

Seriously, though, we did have fun! We discovered we'd been looking in the wrong spot for the monarchs all along, so we might actually see them next year when they come (I fear that if I ever do get to observe the migration it'll be rather anticlimactic.) The location where 300+ were reported the other night is right along this trail...

And look! Acorns -- you can't find those at home.

I think Harper took me a little too seriously on the whole "look over" the overlook thing...

Awww, it's love.

But only briefly before the screeching begins.

So yes, we did have fun. The kids got to run around and get dirty and I entertained myself by taking funny photos. But just guess what happened when we finally decided to turn around and head back down the mountain? Oh yes, the cloud cover was finally lifting. Ha ha ha, God. That's funny. See? there's a peek at our pretty view.

Oh, and for the record, we didn't see any monarchs.

basement update

So....
the doors are in, stained, and polyed (or whatever you'd call putting on three coats of polyurethane)
door handles were installed
the floors are in
the baseboards are back up but need to be painted
the new walls are "mudded" and smoothed and remudded, hopefully for the last time

Pretty much we just have to prime the new walls and finish painting and THEN we'll be able to move all the office stuff down here. Whohooo!

We love the change, as do the kiddos. We weren't anticipating that new floors and doors would make such a dramatic difference, but it is so different and so much BETTER than before. Cole is particularly fond of singing down here and listening to echo. I don't think he's looking forward to there being furniture in the office!

In case you're wondering about the rest of the basement, here's the view of the other side of the room...the rug and the toy chest are from the Pottery Barn outlet (50% off of 50% off), the couch was bought merely for the cup holders (wink) and the built-in was already here when we bought the house...minus the fifteen million television/other electronic wires that I would really love to be able to hide somehow. Remind me sometime to show you the glass we keep on these shelves. We have a fairly small collection but each piece means something to us...

Finally, a photo of Miss Happy-go-Lucky (who says, "HARPER. Name HARPER!" everytime we call her anything but Harper.)

if not to get rained out at the Fair, why go?

Seriously, I paid $6 to get drenched! It was like being on the receiving end of the dunking booth. But he had fun (and was dressed more appropriately) so that's worth it!

a glimpse into our basement

1. An annotated guide to what's going on in our basement today. How unfortunate that I was gone all morning while Mark & his dad started on the project....hmmm...some may say convenient... ; ) Mark suggested yesterday that I could stain the French Doors sometime today. He didn't seem to appreciate my belief that DESIGNERS contract out all manual labor. So I suppose I will get dirty at some point this evening!

2. Thank you so much for your kind comments on the most recent wedding photos! We absolutely appreciate your feedback! Also, in regard to the questions about polarizers, yes, we use them, especially when we're going to be outdoors in bright, bright light such as at Laura and Lance's wedding. We also use hoods on the lenses to keep out as much side light as possible.

3. Finally, a prayer request -- Aaron and Shannon, whose wedding we shot in February 2006, are expecting a baby girl. Maisy's due date is in early November, and I was supposed to take Shannon's belly pics sometime next month, but because of Shannon's preeclampsia and danger to her liver they are going to be delivering baby Maisy today. SO, if you will, please pray for both Shannon and baby Maisy (she's at 32 weeks gestation right now) as well as Aaron.

ETA: Baby Maisy is here! 3 lbs, 6 oz. Both mama and baby seem to be doing well, and Maisy will be spending some time in the NICU.

Thank you!

Laura & Lance | September 8th, 2007
Last Saturday we headed to Fairview on a misty mountain morning...

Just through that break in the trees we came across this...

Here's Laura admiring her bouquet...

...and peeking around the corner to catch a glimpse of the start of the ceremony.

Missoula, the ring bearer. She was very well behaved!

Laura, making her grand entrance atop Sadie.

...escorted down the aisle by her Uncle Gary.

Such a bright, blue, beautiful day!

Can I take your order?
Lately whenever we pull up to a drive-through window Harper gets very excited and promptly gives her order from the backseat:
Chicken and a poptart, mommy! Chicken and a poptart!

It doesn't matter that we're really at the pharmacy, Starbucks, or the bank ATM -- the order is always the same...

frivolity

'Tis a dangerous thing when one of my favorite magazines features a cute pair of shoes on the cover. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that they weren't that expensive (I say this for Mark's sake), and after searching zappos (not the right size), piperlime, (they don't carry Calvin Kleins) and Nordstrom (not in stock until late Sept.) I found a small store based in Chicago that just HAPPENED to have my size in stock. sweet!

And so they arrived last Friday.

(photo by Cole, whose composition isn't bad when I can convince him to stand still!)

more scenes from the front yard
Fueling up before heading to Mexico.

This one was actually on our front porch...

...freaking out slightly about this one! He's taken over one of our daisy plants.

I have to say that we're very excited about this last series -- Mark spotted it under our bird bath (perhaps it was drawn to Harper's pretty flowers floating in the water?)

the weekend in photos

We doped Mark up on Dayquil this past weekend and headed to the Apple Festival in Hendersonville. We've been enjoying the fruits of our labor ever since (and Mark is finally feeling better...something to do with the apples, perhaps?)

Harper thought that our bird bath was looking a little bare, so she decided to make it "pretty" by plucking all of the blooms off our mums. The bird bath did, indeed, look pretty, though I'm not sure what the birds thought.

I rarely say this about bugs but we are glad to have a bunch of these monarch caterpillars visiting us. Mark discovered them on the milkweed plant as he was weeding the front garden...and I was sitting inside enjoying the airconditioning...

We counted at least 10 this morning -- here's one of the smaller residents.

Then there are these guys -- milkweed aphids, apparently. I think we need to invite a few ladybugs over for lunch!

Anyway, that was our weekend. Pretty laid back and restful. I hope you had a great one!
