it's a bird, it's a plane, it's....

...Alphabet Harper!
(not her real costume, though she did make it herself)

whooooo could it be?
Grandma sent a bunch of costumes to Cole a few weeks ago and he's been having a ball dressing up in all the things that Mommy, Aunt Kris, and Uncle Mark wore a looooong time ago.

Tonight, though, he's sticking with his original choice for a costume, and I'll share those photos tomorrow.

Frankenstein's monster
Or as Cole calls him, "Franken-einstein."
He put this together on the floor yesterday while I was editing photos, then called me over to "take a picture, Mommy!"

(At least someone is putting my scrapbook supplies to good use! For the record, he used Maya Road chipboard letters and Autumn Leaves buttons.)

a hunting we will go
A few more from the other day at the Arboretum...

When I told Harper that she had to leave the rocks at the end of the trail she decided to give them "a hug and a kiss" before setting them down on the ground.

guess a number between 1-500 (we have a winner!)
We have a winner! The number I picked was 222 (something simple) and so the winner is Kelli.
Thanks for playing!

little miss sunshine
All I did was ask her to hold hands with her brother yesterday while they were walking through the woods. Guess how well that went...

...she got over it, though!

little miss Maisy

Some days you just don't feel like having your picture taken.
Especially when some people think you should be naked...

But mom and dad can always make things better....

...and a cozy blanket seems to help, too.

on the deck

Mark took these the other day and they make me happy.
Perhaps maybe our children look a little bit like me.
They have Mark's eyelashes, though.
(You just have to lean in reallllly close to see that.)

So, Vancouver...

What a beautiful city!
I was in Vancouver for Canada's Crop for Kids, a fundraiser for Canada's children's hospitals which was actually going on simultaneously in 6 cities throughout the country this past weekend. Early estimates place the combined amount raised at around $200,000, and that's in Canadian dollars (which, as was pointed out to me several times over the weekend, is worth more than the American dollar currently.) Nicole and Mary, who were in charge of the event, went out of their way to take care of me, and I really, really appreciate everything you did, ladies! I hope you're both taking it easy today, though!!

I enjoyed teaching classes for Fiskars bright and early on Saturday morning to a great, fun, easy-going group of women. Fiskars donated all of the tools and leftover supplies from the classes to the Vancouver children's hospital, which I thought was great! I also had the pleasure of meeting and working with Heather, who is wonderful and funny (and she wears a watch, so she was extra helpful!) SO bummed I didn't get to say goodbye to you, Heather!

Along the way I learned what a loonie and a toonie are (I'm probably not spelling those right, but I did manage to spend all of mine.) I saw the stadium where the Canucks play as well as the site of the official 2010 Winter Olympics countdown. We also managed to throw in a little photo shoot for the lovely Carolyn and her husband, Rick. (Check out the second photo below to see just how willing Rick was to have his picture taken!)

Hey Rick -- I think Carolyn might owe you a little for this photo shoot, eh? (See? I said that in Canadian.)

All in all, it was fun, though it felt like a whirlwind...and I have to say that I'm rather tired today. I returned home yesterday, and managed to catch the sunrise in Vancouver, the sunset in Cincinnati, and a crescent moon hanging over Asheville along the way. (Definitely small blessings during a very long trip.) Speaking of blessings, none of my 6 flights were delayed more than 10 minutes, so that was good! The only thing that was delayed, actually, was my luggage, which decided it'd rather stay in Atlanta for a bit and return home to me today.

WPJA recognition

Sarah posted a comment on the blog today and reminded me that I'd won a 10th place award in the Cake Cutting category in the most recent quarterly WPJA contest. So I thought I'd share a little screen shot with you here. (Forgive me if I'm a few weeks late!) This photo was taken during Colleen & Andy's wedding back in July. For some reason, I'm thinking they're not going to want an 8x10 of this particular photo, though... I suppose I might let them choose a different photo as my way of saying thanks!

Heather & Jerry | October 7th
Heather and Jerry were married on a lovely afternoon this past Sunday at Central United Methodist Church in Asheville.

The flowers were provided by Aria Floral out of Burnsville, NC. I love the wooden drawer they used to deliver the flowers!

Just having some post-processing fun with this one...I loved the red!

Heather's dad pinned on Jerry's boutonnière.

Jerry's daughter, the lovely Elyssa.

The grand entrance...

...and exit.

Heather & Jerry | the reception

Sneaking a smooch before heading to their downtown reception at On Broadway.

First dance...

It wasn't all slow dancing, though. Oh no! You can probably guess what they're dancing to here.

A little cake tossing
(the expression on the woman's face behind Jerry cracks me up!)

Followed by some cake smashing!

Heather & Jerry made a special effort to honor the marriages of their friends and family -- from those just starting out and celebrating their first anniversary to Heather's grandparents, who are having a big party next month in honor of their 60th year of marriage. 60 years! I think that's awesome!

We're pretty sure the guests really enjoyed themselves at this reception!

Well, except for this poor woman, who got the heel of her shoe caught in one of the floor vents... I love that her friend is holding up her hand as if to say, "wait! I haven't taken the picture yet!" and quite possibly she might not forgive me for sharing this photo, either!

Cheers to you, Jerry & Heather!
Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your wonderful (and very well organized) day! Even if I did get chased with champagne! Enjoy your honeymoon!

Saturday morning
We hit the patch last Saturday in search of ...what else? pumpkins!

This last one depicts classic sibling rivalry. Even though Cole already has more pumpkins than he can handle he's still mad that Harper is carrying two of her own. Such love, I tell ya.

PS. The "patch" we went to is really just the front lawn of the Groce Methodist Church in Asheville. There are some more authentic places in Hendersonville...

this kid

...has decided that she is afraid of flies.
...knows her full name -- Hahper Crate Bowick
...says "bye, bye Cole!" every day about 5 seconds after we pull away from Cole's preschool
...asks "what you doin' Mommy?" about every other 5 seconds
...bit her brother today
...sleeps with approximately 17 books, 5 puppies, 3 kittens, 2 pairs of shoes, 3 pairs of socks, 2 swimsuits, 2 pink blankets, and 3 pillows each night. We refer to her bed as her "nest."
...tries to order a "chino" from Starbucks
...laughs when she says/does something funny and says, "ha! ha! Harper funny."
...demands "and a hug" after you give her a kiss
...is truly scrumptious (minus the biting)

Sorry I've been absent!

Getting ready for a wedding this weekend.
Getting ready for Vancouver next weekend.

Just for fun I checked the forecast for Vancouver. 50 degrees for the high. Um, not so fun. That's a full 30 degrees colder than here! Eek! I just might need these to get me through. I saw them yesterday at the discount shoe barn for $25 less than anyplace I've found online. (Hello to my darling husband who is at this point rolling his eyes.)

So anyway, that's what I've been busy with this week. How about you?

PS. I have not been able to contact the Raquel who won that scrapbook RAK from a couple of weeks ago. If you know her, please ask her to email me. Thanks!

speaking of mummies...

A super simple project using just tomato cans, black paint, googly eyes, and white gauze. Completely inspired by this post at 2peas. My mummy is on the left and that's Cole's "spider" mummy on the right.

Cole didn't have school today so we took a field trip to....

Target. Yes, I know, don't you want to go there on a field trip too?

Anyway, while browsing the Halloween section at length (it's Cole's favorite holiday, after all) we came across a mummy. Cole asked what it was and I was telling him that it's a mummy you stick in the lawn to look like it's coming out of the ground and Harper frowned, shook her head, and said, "No mommy. Daddy. Daddy."
I was quite happy to know that she didn't think I looked like the mummy, covered in gauze and missing an eye, but apparently it bears an uncanny resemblance to Daddy.
