first glimpse on Christmas morning

Answering some questions:
- The bag is from Pottery Barn - we purchased it a few years ago. We "mail" it back to Santa each year.
- The kids each get one big thing from Santa - so Harper's present is the dollhouse, obviously, and Cole's present (inside the bag) is a race track. They also get smaller presents from Santa, like books or wooden toys. This year Santa provided a little chart with wrapping paper patterns so the Cole would know whose presents were whose.
- It was fairly dark out yet (around 7:30 am so not too early) but mainly it looks dark because the curtains on that side of the house were closed.
- yes, Cole's pj shirt is on backwards. He's big into backwards lately. He writes his name backwards, he taught Harper how to walk up the stairs backwards, he frequently wears his pants backwards, etc.

Rachael & Sean | December 21 | Montreat, NC
We were back at Gaither this past Friday for the wedding of Rachael and Sean.

While Rachael got ready in one of the classrooms above the church Sean was preparing to smile...a lot!

The ringbearer & flower girl were so cute!

Here Sarah Grace is getting some last-minute advice from her parents, Marc & Melissa. Rachael was actually a flower girl at Marc & Melissa's wedding so I think it was extra special for them to have Sarah Grace be the flower girl for this wedding! In addition, Marc & Melissa run The Red Radish catering company, and they provided the food for this wedding. (They make the best food ever(!!), and we were very fortunate to have them cater our own wedding, though they don't do weddings anymore.)

Rachael's father (who happened to be one of Mark's professors when Mark attended Montreat) served double-duty as dad and pastor for the service.

I love how the church was decorated for Christmas!

Loved this one of this little girl trying to get a better view of the ceremony.

After some portraits we headed to the fellowship hall for dining & dancing.

Thank you, Rachael & Sean, for allowing us to be a part of your exciting day! We hope you're having a wonderful (warm) honeymoon. Merry Christmas!

The Best Kind of Thank You

We received this canvas and card from Aaron & Shannon recently. Not only did they use an image we took of baby Maisy as their Christmas card (they had it printed at modern postcard, who did a really nice job) but they also sent us a beautiful painting by Aaron.

We are soo thankful for all of our wedding & portrait clients this year and we wanted all of you to know that we sincerely appreciate your happy emails and handwritten notes (and messages from your family members, and recommendations, and gifts!) We really enjoyed working with each of you this past year and thank you for your business as well as brightening our Saturdays, occasional Fridays & Sundays, and for sharing your sweet babies and children with us. Your words and trust mean a great deal to us and are the best thank you we could receive.

We wanted to extend our thanks to those 2008 clients who have booked us already as well -- we are wholeheartedly looking forward to working with each of you this coming year!

Merry Christmas!

You are the queen of interesting giveaways! Each one looks just like something I'd love :)) Thanks for all the goodness this month. Have a wonderful Christmas. I'm looking forward to seeing some more amazing photos.

Thank you all so much for participating! Merry Christmas to everyone!

In random topics, today is our last wedding of the year. I was hoping for a little snow but alas, that's not going to happen. I'm still looking forward to it, though! ; )

Would you believe that we moved into this house one year ago yesterday? I would never, ever, ever recommend moving around Christmastime if you can avoid it. However, in comparison, this year seems so much calmer!

quarrelsome
Our drive to Cole's school in the morning is around 15 minutes each day. Some drives are passed pleasantly, but most are sort of loud and screechy. Today, while following a car that had "honk 4 world peace" written on its back windshield, Cole and Harper were arguing about whether or not Harper had seen a puppy dog. Exasperated, I decreed that they couldn't speak to each other anymore. Shortly thereafter, almost spontaneously, it seemed, they both started singing to themselves. Harper was, of course, singing about the mythical puppy dog, while Cole was singing a song about how Harper couldn't possibly have seen a puppy dog and Mommy and Daddy and Cole thought she was crazy. But at least they weren't yelling. Lesson learned: if you're going to argue pleasantly, do it in song.

photography course write-up

You can view the course description here. The class will start in early January, and, best of all, it's free. You don't even have to sign up for the class. The information will be available each week for download, and then, if you want, you can participate on the photography message board thread that we'll start each week to discuss that particular week's topic or post a photo that corresponds with the weekly challenge.

Thank you so much for your questions and thoughts! Keep 'em coming!

12 Weeks to Better Photos
Mark and I are working on an online course for 2 peas that will start in January -- the title of the course is 12 Weeks to Better Photos, and the course will include a weekly topic, a discussion thread on the photography board, a downloadable PDF so you can print out all of the information, and weekly challenges associated with each topic.

SO, I wanted to ask for your help. Do you have suggestions for topics or questions for us? We already have a pretty firm outline but I'm curious about the things that you want to know. We're going to incorporate your questions into a Q&A section on each PDF so that everyone can benefit from the questions you ask.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Advent giveaway #3 -- CLOSED
Thank you all for the well-wishes for my mom & brother - we did have a good week together! Sadly, they are now back home (sans their luggage, which will hopefully be delivered to them tomorrow. Philadelphia, apparently, is the hub of all lost luggage.)

So we're on to Advent giveaway #3 this week! This one is alllllll scrapbook related, encased in a pretty Amy Butler bag from K&Co. It holds a 2008 Designing With... calendar among other things. So if you'd like to win, please post below! I'll announce the winner on Tuesday (so that we can squeeze in drawing #4 before Christmas, too.)

Advent giveaway #2 -- CLOSED
The theme of giveaway #2 is home decor and mainly features things that hang. Not everything is pictured below, and I'd take a better photo but I'm off to pick up my brother & mom who are flying in today from Minnesota. Whohooo for that!

So anyway, if you are interested, please post below (remember, I need a way to contact you in the event that you win!) We'll draw a winner sometime on Thursday this week.

Santa Cards

A fun idea I thought I'd share with you. I can't claim it as my own, as one of the Garden Girls shared the idea with me originally. What I have done for our cards is modified the design so that Santa's hat is actually hanging off of the card itself. The cards we made are 6x6, which worked well for a Harper-size handprint but was a little small for Cole's handprints (hence the reason Santa's hat is off the card.)
We used green, pink, white, red & black cardstock, white paint, a regular hole punch, a slightly-smaller sized hole punch and an oval punch (but you could hand cut the circles/ovals as desired.) The plastic noses came from some game Cole has lost most of the pieces to, so we decided to put the leftovers to use. (You could also use googly eyes instead of white & black punches.) We wrote on the inside of each thank you note with white pen.

yesterday's party

We were so thankful to have many of our friends & neighbors join us for a Christmas party yesterday. Being hosts and photographers, we pulled out the white backdrop and kindly asked (okay, forced) everyone to have their pictures taken. Somehow in the mayhem I missed taking a photo of our newest neighbors, and I'm bummed about that, but I think we got everyone else who attended. I've been smiling going through the photos today and so I thought I'd share some with you... Wyatt (with the antlers, but he's just pretending, because he's not a real reindeer) wins for being the most adorable.

Thank you to everyone for coming together and celebrating the season with us!

PS. Special thanks to my mom for mailing some Christmas cookies at the last minute!

reindeer cookies

Cole & I made these super easy and cute reindeer cookies on Friday in preparation for our Christmas party yesterday (more on the party in a later post.) They're basically peanut butter cookies with a red m&m for the nose, mini semi-sweet chocolate chips for eyes, and broken pretzels for antlers. Cole especially enjoyed rolling the dough into balls and plopping it on the cookie sheets.

We found the recipe in a recent issue of Woman's Day.

Advent giveaway #1 -- winner!
I used a random number generator and the winner is....

Sherry Williams!

Sometimes it pays to enter late in the game!

Stay tuned for another giveaway next week!
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

PS. Harper saw a little dog with short hair and pointy ears (and wearing a pink jacket) today and was convinced that it was a baby kangaroo. Because everyone carries a live baby kangaroo around with them as they shop...

behind the wheel
This morning on the way to preschool Cole & Harper were arguing about who would get to drive our car when they were older, and I thought, seriously, this starts already?

Advent giveaway #1 -- CLOSED
eta: this giveaway is now closed. thanks for participating!
So here it is -- giveaway #1 in honor of the first week of Advent.
How's your week going, by the way?

I was trying to photograph the contents of this case when I decided that it might just be easier to leave the giveaway as a surprise. I know, you love surprises, right?
Well, too bad if you don't. Suffice it to say, though, that this is a giveaway that includes things that I think all of my readers would enjoy. Which means it isn't scrapbook-related, specifically. It is, however, art & craft related because those are things that I love. And you love too, right?

Okay, okay, some hints. Yes, that cute adorable suitcase from Paper Source is included. As well as a few somethings from posie, Erika Ebert Press, and purlsoho, and maybe also something handmade by Mark.

So, if you are still interested, please post below (remember, I need a way to contact you in the event that you win!) We'll draw a winner sometime on Friday.

Thank you!

PS. Almost forgot - happy birthday to my dad today! Speaking of things in containers, we sent him a Christmas tree for his birthday. did you know you could do such a thing? Not to worry, though, this giveaway does NOT include a Christmas tree.

While the rest of you have snow...
We'll just stick with falling leaves!

Here's Harper as she prepares to throw leaves.

Prior to that she was hugging them ...or maybe smelling them? Not sure.

Cole decided to join in the fun this time, too.
