| a favorite photo from Italy |

Ran across this photo taken in Venice the other night... (forgive the scratch marks - I was playing with clipping masks in Photoshop.) It's been almost 3 years since we went to Italy. No current plans for traveling out of the country anytime soon, so I'll just appease my wanderlust by looking at pictures. Actually, I'm thinking about making an Asuka album with our photos from that trip.
Or maybe we should at least print some of them out, eh? Technically, I do have this photo framed on a shelf in my office.
Random tangent: While I'm looking around and counting, I just noticed I have 7 framed or mounted photos of Cole and/or Harper, all in my little office. Plus 3 more of Harper that I'm trying to decide where to hang. I guess I like those kids a bit...I need more picture space.
Random tangent #2: Did you notice? I spruced up the blog a little... Also made a new homepage. Just a little spring...er, rather, winter, cleaning while I'm avoiding the things I'm supposed to be doing!Labels: Italy |

| week 4 |

Find it here.
Happy Monday! How are you today? I am tired. Like, need a Dr. Pepper before lunch, tired. It's no one's fault but my own, though. There's just so much more I can get done from 10-midnight instead of sleeping. Except when it catches up with me....
Speaking of sleep (or the lack thereof) Harper rolled out of bed last night at the exact same moment that Mark opened her bedroom door to check on her (we always check on the kids before heading to bed ourselves.) He said she hit the floor, looked up, and then put her head back down on the floor to go back to sleep. He took pity on her and put her back in bed, but first he had to remove allllllll of the books that were on her bed, preventing her from sleeping at the head of her bed where it's impossible to fall off and where we generally encourage her to sleep.
In Cole news, he keeps asking, "Is tomorrow after today?" Which of course, "Yes, Cole, tomorrow is always after today." But then the next day he asks "Is it tomorrow mommy?" inquiring whether it's tomorrow today. And I have to say no, because tomorrow is always tomorrow and not really today. Confused yet? Yup. It's a Monday. |

| a short series of photos for you |
While Mark's parents were here this weekend Mark's mom let Cole play some Playmobile games on her laptop.
Waiting to move up to the next level....

| more snow! |

I had to laugh when I checked my email yesterday morning and read the following from Julia, who lives in Asheville: "Does this snow mean that I will get to see some H and C snow bunny pictures on your blog?"
Why, YES, Julia, you do!
We had 3 or maybe 4 inches of snow yesterday -- I don't know officially how much (picture me motioning: it went up about this far on my Ugg boots -- total tangent - best purchase ever.) BUT the snow had a nice little coating of ice on top which made for fun sledding, and it was enough snow to make a snowman, so I know that Kate (a Canadian, so you know she knows about snow) won't mock me like she did the last time I posted our lack-of-snow pictures.
He doesn't have school again today so I guess we might have to go outside again!
She won't smile at me for photos so you'll just have to settle for eating snow pictures.
Our snowman -- buttons courtesy of Autumn Leaves since we couldn't find any rocks. Speaking of eating, Harper also tried to eat the carrot.
This is the "I'm cold and ready to go inside, Mommy, but let me take this snowball inside, too" picture. |

| good NIGHT! |
I am currently listening to Harper play with her animals: "Good night, puppy! Sweet dreams!" she says sweetly. Then, "Crocodile? What are you doing? Good night!" (not so sweetly) Followed by, "Shhhhh, crocodile! GOOD NIGHT!" (said rather forcefully)
Do you think perhaps we're having a few sleep issues in our house lately? |

| seeking bliss |
I am curious about this book. Apparently Asheville is listed in it as a happy place. The Asheville Citizen-Times quotes the author as saying, “Asheville has earned a singular reputation as the kind of city that Americans move to seek their bliss." My favorite quote in the article, though, is from a local Ashevillian, who says, “I think Asheville is the happiest place because we have a high concentration of creative people.” He continues, “Being creative and knowing you are not alone in the world, that is enough for hope.”
I love that! Being creative is certainly a large part of our lives here. But I'm sure you can be happy in your creative home, too! |

| Speaking of obsessions... |

Harper's latest is elephants. Don't get me wrong, she still loves her puppy dogs. But lately, it's been all about the elephants.
Here she is trumpeting along with one of her new elephants on Christmas Day. For the longest time she called them "whoooooos" (for the trumpeting sound they make) but now she does call them elephants. I sorta miss the whooos.

Speaking of Christmas, the doll house she received is really just a big elephant sanctuary. Apparently they stormed around the roof so much it actually crashed the house down! (awaiting repair by Mark this weekend.)

My latest purchase - I found this shirt online at gapkids for $4.99, so I bought it in 2 sizes. (please also take note of the princess sippy cup, which is another favorite.)

Perhaps it stems back to her very first stuffed animal (she's a month old in this photo.) At any rate she loves them, no matter how many times she tosses them onto the floor or bites their trunks.
edited to add: after I posted this my Mom emailed to remind me that Harper's actually on the calendar page for this weekend in the Designing With 2008 daily calendar, pictured with guess what - her elephant! Talk about a funny coincidence! This is the layout that appears on the page.

So dramatic, this one. |

| feeling orange... |
I bought this sweater a few weeks ago at Banana Republic.

When I came home from shopping I hung my keys up next to my "Fall" purse (which is really a Spring purse, but I bought it on clearance from lotta jansdotter's shop this past fall and felt the need to use it right away. Until Mark's mom gave me a new purse which is my winter purse and explains why I wasn't carrying my fall purse while shopping...)

Anyway, this is the Fall purse and hmmmmmm...hey, no WONDER that sweater looked familiar! Apparently I am consistently liking patterned orange & white. Not to mention the orange walls in the dining room. But really, I'm not obsessed. It's not even my favorite color, nor am I a Clemson fan.
Please file this post under completely irrational obsessions and go on your merry way. |

| The problem with Target |
I decided that the next time I "need" a few essentials from the store (such as laundry detergent and diapers) I'm just going to have to send Mark. Because the moment Harper & I step into Target our list of "needs" (and contents in our cart) grows extensively.
Take, for example, this Valentine's crocodile. When I first saw it I laughed -- I guess it just seemed rather anti-valentiney but cute at the same time in the midst of all the Valentine stuff. Harper, of course, agreed completely and promptly placed it next to her in the cart. Upon further contemplation it made me think of a children's book we have, "The Christmas Crocodile," and I thought a Valentine Crocodile might be a good continuation of the theme (we've been calling it a crocodile, but it might just be a Valentine Alligator -- hard to tell with reptile plush.)

Continuing on the same Valentine's theme, we also came home with this adorable door mat. I mean, it has one of my favorite fonts on it -- how could I resist? So cute!

See what I mean? Target. Bad. stay away. or you just might end up with your own family crocodile... ...or 2 boxes of peanut butter crunch - 2 for $5 this week!
On the upside, I did manage to remember to buy both the laundry detergent AND the diapers.

| First photos |
For the past 3 years the first thing I've done on each January 1st is take a photo of both kids (bedhead and all.) I think it's fun to document their growth from year to year. I posted color versions last year but here they are in black & white.

Speaking of photos, according to aperture we took 4981 photos last year (not counting portraits or weddings.) I should maybe edit a few of those. ; )
Happy New Year!Labels: Cole, Harper |
