| Spring Break |
Cole's been on Spring Break this week from school. Unfortunately, it wasn't a good time for Mark to take a vacation, as he's spent most of this week at work prepping for a big convention next week in Las Vegas. So, instead, the three of us have just been taking it easy (sorry, Mark!) We've mixed in a few "scheduled" days with the low-key ones, however, and today we had a busy morning.
They said, "Mommy, loooooook! A castle!"

And then they were off...

...to my surprise they wanted to check out the inside of the house first. So up and down we went, covering all 4 floors plus the basement (though Cole really wanted to go on a rooftop tour.) Thankfully, Biltmore takes care of their kids, and we had a "treasure map" that we followed to make it fun for them as we walked (breezed) through the rooms. Cole's favorite was the Halloween Room in the basement of the house, whereas Harper really preferred the fountain. Outside.

They had such fun checking it all out, and I had fun photographing them...as well as other things...

The Festival of Flowers starts at the end of next week (I think) so there weren't many tulips in bloom yet. We made due with the vibrant forsythia & daffodils, though.

More random photos...

Look -- they even indulged me with a photo! (And they're both looking at the camera in this shot - remarkable! It probably had more to do with the promise of scooby snacks, though...)

I really think that they both had a great time. Neither of them has been to the Biltmore since they were babies so I think this is a visit they'll actually remember. I was so proud of them, too, as they were really well-behaved, even during lunch at the Stable Cafe. The crayons & coloring books were a big hit.

Finally, since I was parched by the time we left the Estate (not to mention the fact it was 66 degrees by this time) we capped off our trip with a stop at Starbucks for some Double Chocolate Chip Creme Frappuccinos.
The other good part about a productive morning? LOoooooong naps. ; )Labels: spring |

| Soccer |
He absolutely loved it! So glad about that. Although his legs were still hurting him on Sunday & Monday from all the running! He was just happy as a clam to be out there, no matter which way he kicked the ball. Harper watched most of it and would yell from time to time, "Kick the ball, Cole!" I think she'll be the competitive one in the family.
The place where they play is indoors, which is nice in case of rain, but it's really, really dark (and cold) since there aren't any windows in the whole place. I just loved the excitement on his face in this photo, though.Labels: Cole |

| Know what I love? |
Call me weird, but I love processing portrait orders!

It's definitely a hands-on process for us:
...taking orders and learning which images are our clients' favorites.
...working on the individual images, doing small edits to enhance them...things you wouldn't necessarily notice unless you hold your proof image and your finished image side by side. Making sure the images "pop."
...inspecting every portrait when it comes back from the lab, making sure it's just right (I'm such a perfectionist about that...it's hard for me to let the images go.)
...packaging up the orders prettily and sending them out.
...envisioning these photos -- memories -- on the walls of our clients' homes.
...knowing that you trust us to capture these images and provide the final products to you. That makes me so happy! It makes the work worth it.
I am so thankful to be working in such a fulfilling profession. Thank you for allowing us to do so!

| this one & that one |

This one was being extra-bossy to Harper this morning so I told him he needed to be nice and give her a compliment. I suggested, "I love that you're my sister, Harper," and "You have pretty blue eyes." He didn't seem to like those, however, and finally (very grudgingly) settled on, "I like your feet, Harper." Close enough.
That one decided a little payback was in order and tried on a certain someone's Spider Man outfit while he was at school. It's the stealth attack of the little sister -- I'll play with your stuff when I know you're gone.

| Week 11 |

The 12 week photography course over at 2peas is winding down with just one week to go after this one! I'm especially excited about this week, though, because it's about the passion behind taking photos rather than the technical advice and tips & tricks we've addressed in previous weeks. It's all about WHY you take photos, and I'd love to see you post your favorite photos for this week's photography challenge!
Special thanks to Karen Russell, who was our contributor this week. I love what she had to say!Labels: photography class |

| Friday! |
So, I see I've been absent from posting since Tuesday. But I had strep throat, so that counts, no? Thankfully, the kids didn't get it.
Little Harperisms of late...
She calls M&Ms "MMs." So cute.
Last night I gave her a fork (which is still a special privilege) and she stabbed her beans and said, "owie! owie!" as if the beans were in pain. Then the beans "danced" on top of the fork and flew across the room. No more fork for Harper.
She accompanied me to the courthouse the other day (to get some paperwork) and thought that putting my purse through the x-ray machine was the funniest thing ever (especially when it came out the other side.) All of the ladies who work at the courthouse swooned over her, making the processing of paperwork the simplest thing ever. I should bring her everywhere. Oh wait, I already do.
In Cole news, he starts soccer tomorrow! And is less than excited about it. I think once we get there and he has fun he'll be fine. Or maybe it's the fact that his team is called the Chipmunks. Whatever. I hope he decides it's fun.
Which means tomorrow is Saturday already, and Easter is almost a week away! I can't believe it. I was just wrapping my head around St. Patrick's Day on Monday and then I realized I'd better get some egg dye and eggs pronto if we're going to fit that in beforehand.
Goodness!
Anyway, happy Friday!
PS. Thanks for subscribing to the feed for my blog. Makes me feel special. ; ) |

| rainy day giveaway (closed) |
You know the weather forecasters are confident when they call for a "100% chance" of rain. Indeed, it is raining today. Thankfully, I have a yummy caramel macchiato beside me to keep me warm. And what better on a rainy day than to do a giveaway? Conveniently, I just received a box via UPS late last night that contained my layouts and 2 extra copies of Jessica Sprague's new special issue:

Which means I'd like to share the extra copies with you! So please comment below if you'd like to be entered in the drawing (keeping in mind that I need a way to contact you if you do.) We'll draw 2 winners tonight!
I really enjoyed creating the layouts that I was assigned for this issue. I don't do much magazine/manufacturer work anymore so this was a treat for me. In honor of Easter I'll give you one sneak peek:

| positive reinforcement |
Spotted on Cole's worksheets from last week...

I love that he's added his own smiley faces in addition to the stickers given out by the teachers. Like Mark said, at least he's confident in his own work! |

| Week NINE |

I can't believe we're in the last month of this photography course! To be honest, when I'm laboring over the coursework each week it doesn't feel like it's moving along so quickly, but on the other hand, we've been doing this since January and here it is March already!
Anyway, everything you need for week 9 (including links for previous weeks if you need to catch up) can be found here.
A big thank you to Rachel Ludwig and Carrie Sandoval for their contributions to portrait week!Labels: photography class |
