| Rebecca & John | rehearsal dinner |

I wanted to talk about rehearsal dinners a bit, as we're covering a handful of them this year for our wedding couples. The thing I love most about them is that they are always brimming with emotion - you've just wrapped up a somewhat chaotic rehearsal and there's a lot of excitement and nervous energy in the air that comes about when you gather so many different people together. Add to that the anticipation of the big day just around the corner -- the culmination of many months of planning/stress/worry -- plus good food, wine, memory-laden slideshows, well-spoken toasts, and, by the end of the evening, a little bit of plain old exhaustion.

At rehearsal dinners we also enjoy the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the bride & groom's family and friends, who will be seeing quite a lot of us the following day. One way we do this is by setting up a "photo booth" where all the guests are invited (or sometimes forced!) to ham it up in front of the camera. The results are fun photos for the bride & groom as well as a shared camaraderie with the wedding guests.

Seriously, rehearsal dinners are just plain fun!
PS. Rebecca & John's rehearsal dinner took place at La Riserva in Hendersonville, NC. Another location we enjoyed recently for a rehearsal dinner was Cafe on the Square in downtown Asheville.Labels: Asheville wedding photography |

| sunflowers |
I have been smitten with sunflowers for a long, long time. So when Rebecca (just married this past Saturday) mentioned during the consultation that there would be sunflowers in bloom at her reception, I was very excited! The reception took place at a private estate in Flat Rock, and there were, indeed, sunflowers, tomato plants, pumpkin vines, and, oh yeah, beautiful guests and drinks and music and food. I quickly snapped these shots while the guests were eating.

And here's the view from the gardens of the reception tent. It was a beautiful sultry summer wedding - I can't wait to show you the rest of the photos!Labels: summer |

| Little Boy Blue |
Little boy blue, come blow your horn, The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn...

Where is that boy who looks after the sheep? Under the haystack fast asleep. Will you wake him? Oh no, not I For if I do he will surely cry!

| At least they come with a warning symbol... |

Mean mama spider. One day this past spring I picked up a rock, only to discover a black widow clinging to the bottom of it. I immediately dropped the rock and ran to tell Mark. The first thing he asked me was if I'd killed the spider. Umm, no. In the "fight or flight" theory I picked flight. Same thing with this bugger here. I got a little too close to it while weeding and immediately notified Mark that I wanted it killed ASAP. He just had to photograph it first, though. I would so much rather photograph flowers...Labels: summer |

| almost 3 |

She turns 3 in a week! (eek!) She dressed herself today. (Love that she paired that skirt with a dress.) She loves to be barefoot. She's the filthiest princess/tomboy we know. She's turned from sweet to sassy. Oh, so sassy. She's highly influenced by her big brother. She picked out two books at the library today: "Bugs" and "Sharks!" She wants to go to kindergarten, too. Her favorite colors are pink and purple. She still loves puppies, only now when she sees a dog she says, "That's MY puppy! I take him home?" She's finally potty-trained. She refuses to smile at the camera. She's fearless. She rides her hot wheels down the hill with abandon and a cackle. She picks up bugs and squishes them. She has moments where she's still so baby-faced cute I can't stand it. (Then the independence returns and time-outs are frequent.) She asked for "purple sprinkles" for her birthday. No toys, just sprinkles. Purple. Lots of them.Labels: Harper |

| Laura's Bridal Portraits |
On Saturday Laura & Travis celebrated their wedding in a very fun, very big way with their family & friends. I'll post photos of their wedding later this week, but in the meantime here are a few of Laura's bridal portraits taken a few weeks ago at Kenmure.
A full-length shot so you can see her beautiful dress...Mind you, she's about 6ft tall...and she rocked that dress!
This one greeted the guests at the reception on Saturday night.
 And here's a not-very-formal but oh-so-Laura shot that I love. Such a happy bride!Labels: Asheville wedding photography |

| Talkative |

I did a layout a few months ago for Jessica Sprague's column in the August issue of Creating Keepsakes, which just landed in my mailbox last week. (Forgive the bad scan, will ya?) The layout includes a bunch of my favorite phrases that Harper uses (for example, she says "MMs," instead of "M and Ms." The last line, which you probably can't read from here, includes an excerpt of a daily conversation she would have with people we encountered while running errands:
Stranger to Harper: How are you? H: Two. Stranger: How old are you? H. Good.
For some reason there's a disconnect whenever someone asks Harper how old she is. Now she's actually changed up her responses a bit so when someone asks how old she is she says, "Harper Kate." (When I try to prompt her by saying that they want to know her age she responds with "H.") The ONLY time you'll get a number out of her is when you happen to inquire with Cole, first, about how old he is (5). And THEN when you ask Harper the same question she'll say very matter-of-factly and in all seriousness: "Six."
PS. I forgot to mention that the thought bubble on the layout is from the digi kit found here.Labels: Harper, scrapbooking |

| Happy 4th of July! |

He's looking quite patriotic today, don't you think? (And just so you know, he styles himself. I only raise an eyebrow every now and then, such as the day he decided to wear two mismatched shoes to preschool...or the day he wore his bike helmet to run all our errands...)Labels: Cole, summer |

| speaking of butterflies... |

We went back to the Nature Center today to check out the butterfly exhibit which opened over the weekend. So weird to think that we've been going to this exhibit since Cole was close to the same age that Harper is now! It's always fun, though, and we try to arrive right when the Center opens because the butterflies are still quite willing to be held.
PS. For those who asked, most of the close-up photos on the blog recently were taken with the Canon 100mm Macro.Labels: Asheville, Cole, Harper, summer |
