Holiday Sessions are here!
I realize you may still be relishing the last bit of summer, but it's time to start thinking about the holidays! (At least, as far as your photos are concerned - you don't have to go Christmas shopping just yet!)

This year we're offering a limited number of portrait sessions for families from September - early November in preparation for the holidays. These holiday sessions are priced at $250 and include a one-hour Family Fun photography session as well as a set of 50 holiday cards. And maybe a few other treats, if you're good.

I am available on weekday mornings and just a handful of Saturdays from September - early November to accommodate your family, so first come, first served! Please just email us at portraits@tuesdaysfrog.com or give us a call at 828.713.4150 to set up your session!

Speaking of cards, here are a few of the designs we're offering this year.

Thanks, Laura & Travis!

This shimmery lil' note arrived late last week from Laura and Travis. Laura has the prettiest handwriting! Here's an excerpt: Joanna & Mark...we loved how you were able to find "us" and bring that out in the photos. We appreciate how easy to work with and energetic you both were and we're so thankful for all of the stress you took off our shoulders!

Their note also reminded me that I wanted to show you an inspiration board of the colors for their wedding. I loved the combination of navy blue with that crisp, cool green in their wedding details (particularly the ribbons around the cake and the napkins!) We've actually been seeing a lot of green this year. I'll have to do another post about that...

Thank YOU, Laura & Travis!

The 1st Day of Kindergarten

Here he is, bright and early this morning! He was SO ready to go!

I post this one merely for comparison's sake with the photo below it.

Yes, that's me on my first day of school, sometime in the early 80s...please note the Strawberry Shortcake bag. She was my favorite. (So much so that I just bought Harper this shirt...)

Speaking of H, this photo makes me go "Awwwwww!" She soooooo wanted to stay with Cole and go to Kindergarten, too. Here she's looking through the window into his classroom after we told him goodbye. She's since asked about him several times, but has also raided his room for cars, so I think she may have discovered the good thing about him being gone!

The weirdest part about school (besides the whole trust-your-child-with-a-complete-stranger-thing) is that it will be just the two of us at lunchtime today. For almost 6 years Cole and I have had lunch together and now he won't be here. Supposedly he'll be arriving home via the school bus around 2:15 (there's that whole trusting-a-stranger-thing again!) He is SO excited to ride the bus. I don't remember much about my first day of school but I do remember being excited to ride the bus, too.

ETA: The skirt that Harper is wearing is from the J.Crew crewcuts for kids division. I hate to tell you this but the pink is sold out. There are still some yellow ones in larger sizes available here.

speaking of Coley...

Last week we found out that Cole won 3rd place in a contest sponsored by 10grain, a children's furniture company. He spent the better part of his "quiet time" one afternoon this past spring coming up with his own creation after I gave him the prompt, which was to design a playground. Although I think he's a little bummed that no one is actually going to create his playground (it included monsters and a treehouse with chairs on top so that the parents could supervise) he was very excited to receive his prize today. He's already decorated his bedroom walls with the spots, in fact!

my constant companions

Oh, these two! I love them so, no matter how much their incessant fighting/arguing/competing with each other drives me up the wall. Because sometimes they're still cute. They've been my constant companions this summer, and I've enjoyed it. But now summer is almost OVER. I can't believe it! Cole starts Kindergarten tomorrow. Harper will start preschool in a couple of weeks. Our world turns topsy-turvy again. Change is good, I suppose. Sometimes. Not always easy, but good. Good for them...with maybe just a little bit of peace & quiet for me sprinkled in between all the driving back and forth.

she said...
While exiting the pew at church yesterday Harper looked up excitedly and asked, "Is it over?" When I assured her that church was indeed over she said, "Whohooo! Now we can talk." We keep telling her that church is the pastor's time to talk and for a chatterbox I suppose our mandate to "be quiet" feels rather stifling. The really funny part, though, is that she actually thinks she's being quiet during the service.

Deep Summer

Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability. — Sam Keen

I subscribe to Real Simple's Daily Thought, and I especially liked the quote they emailed yesterday -- my two favorite parts being the term "deep summer" and the bit about laziness. Which is why at around 5pm each day, while we wait for Mark to come home from work, you'll find us outside on the hammock enjoying the shade of the backyard. I'm usually reading a book while the kids are playing on the playground, though they'll occasionally indulge me by coming by for a swing. To me that's what summer is really about -- it gives you time to just be.

DIY landscaping
Our other project this summer (besides weddings) has been landscaping the side yard. Living in the mountains often means that yards can be less than level, and our house is built into the side of a hill. So while the front yard is pretty flat the backyard is not, and the west side of our house, in particular, was fairly inaccessible to the backyard (frankly, the only thing it did was give good momentum to soccer balls that wandered off course from the driveway.) So, Mark came up with a great landscaping plan that was threefold: to make the backyard accessible from the driveway, to make the space more visually appealing, and to prevent erosion as every rainfall was carrying dirt right down the hill with it.

So this is the yard back in mid-April. Mark was using the hose to try and visualize some rock walls, and you'll notice at the very top of the photo that our rock order (2 1/2 tons of rock) had already arrived. We chose to work with stone from a local quarry because we really wanted to keep the design natural.

Here's the next shot of everything in progress. The rocks are drystacked on top of each other to form the walls and Mark used much larger slabs to create the steps. This photo was taken at the end of June, I think, shortly after we'd ordered a dumptruck load of dirt (15 cubic yards) and had begun to use it to fill in the walls. The kids did their part by packing down the dirt while playing on top of it. ; ) The really fun part about having rocks and dirt delivered is that we still had to transport everything down the hill. (Also known as our great summer weight-loss plan.)

And here, finally, at the end of July, is the project by solar light. A couple things to point out:
The rain barrel (a repurposed whiskey barrel) is there to collect rain water, obviously, since before it was just pouring out the bottom of the gutter and taking dirt down the hill with it. But it also has a hose on it so that we can water the plants in the beds created by the walls, which should be really handy next summer. We put down Cypress mulch and relocated about 5 plants that we had in the front of the house to try and help hold the dirt in place. We also added 5 azalea plants which you'll see next to the stone steps, plus a crape myrtle and two wild roses which are in the beds.

All in all, this project cost us about $800 for rock and dirt, including delivery charges. The rain barrel was Mark's gift for Father's Day...I think it was about $70 (not including shipping) and weighs about 70 pounds without water in it. We already had our main tools - a wheelbarrow, 2 shovels, and gloves. The rest was a heck of a lot of sweat equity, water, and icees in the afternoons. We probably could have finished it sooner but we knew we'd have 10 weddings on weekends in this time span, too, so we allowed ourselves the summer to get it done.

The next phase is rebuilding a dry river bed which you can sorta see in the last photo to the right of the azaleas & stone steps, as that is the point where most of the rain descends the hill. Oh yeah, and our brother-in-law is working on a deck that covers the concrete patio directly behind our house. I'll have to show you that, too, when it's done. And then there's the dining room where I want to put up crown molding and repaint, but I should really stop talking before Mark collapses.

August 5th

My mom just reminded me that I have a layout on the Designing With... calendar page for today. These photos were taken in Italy, oh so long ago (okay, so 3.5 years - before Harper, anyway.) I wonder where we'll go the next time we travel abroad -- or when that will be? So tell me, what vacations are you currently planning? Where would you love to go on a trip? Indulge my travel bug, will you?

Art on Main

The kids and I checked out the "Art on Main" in downtown Hendersonville this past Friday. We got there early, so most of the booths weren't officially open for business yet (but there were still parking spaces - score for us!) so we mostly just window-shopped. But I did buy this beautiful maple bowl made by an artisan from Whittier, NC. I just love and appreciate all the detail that went into making it. You can check out more of his intricate work here.

Rebecca & John | July 26th, 2008

First, a few details -- the hair...

...the beautiful bouquet...

...and the handsome, happy groom. He was so calm and so ready to be married!

Rebecca & Henry outside the church, just before he walked her down the aisle.

It was such a sweet ceremony...

...with a few happy tears.

Talk about drivin' through downtown Hendersonville in style!

Ah yes, the sunflowers!

A few reception details for you - the theme was birds. Rebecca had a feather in her bouquet as well.

During the dance...

...and the departure. I wish you could see this photo larger to really get an idea of how much birdseed was flying through the air!

About Us
Hi! I'm Joanna, author of this journal. My husband Mark and I are photographers in Asheville, North Carolina. Most recently we collaborated on a 12 week beginner photography course, the contents of which you can find
    • here.
    • The name of our company, Tuesday's Frog, is based on an almost wordless children's book about frogs that go flying on lily pads one night. We love it because it tells a story in pictures. Cole & Harper are our children, and frequent (though not always willing) photography subjects. So here you'll find not only the story of our lives, but of those we've photographed as well. We'd love to tell your story, too!
