| Westbend Vineyards |

On Saturday we headed over to Westbend Vineyards in Lewisville, NC for a wedding. As evidenced by the standing water in the fields, it had rained on Thursday and Friday in the area. It also rained on Saturday morning and sprinkled on Saturday afternoon, but, finally, finally, the clouds parted, making way for a beautiful pink sunset on Saturday evening. The timing couldn't have been more perfect! Wedding photos will follow soon but here's one that was pretty indicative of the state of the vineyard when we arrived.Labels: Asheville wedding photography |

| here's... wyatt |
Wyatt was so happy and smiley and cute -- truly an easy-going 9 month old.
He was in town last week from New Jersey, and took time out of his busy schedule to smile for me. Here he's getting a little lovin' from his grandpa, whom he was visiting.Labels: Asheville baby photography, Asheville portrait photography |

| Product Focus: wedding proofs |

Here's another fun product to show you - wedding proofs. These are individual 5x5 prints of every single wedding image that you see in your gallery. Though the print size is 5x5, the actual image size is 4x3, surrounded by a sloppy black border. You can have your proofs spiral bound in sets of 100 or leave them loose and store them in the provided presentation box. (To give you an idea, a set of 500 prints would come in a 6x6x6 square box.)
What I like best about these proofs is that you can do so many things with them - you can easily frame your favorites in small frames, and you can pull out those candid shots of family & friends to include with your thank you notes or holiday gifts. You could turn one into a pretty neat postcard, too.
These are also available on the portrait side -- if you desire a proof of every single image from your portrait session you can purchase the entire set.Labels: products |

| The Very Hungry Caterpillar |
 At 5:52pm...
 ...and later, at 7:11pm...
We decided to bring two caterpillars indoors this year in an attempt to observe the whole caterpillar-to-butterfly process. They're rooming in what is really a cute little house for candles but I don't think my sister, who gave us the gift, minds too much that we've turned it into a terrarium for now. Unfortunately, we missed the transformation process from caterpillar to chrysalis last night as it fell right over dinner/bathtime/bedtime for the kids. But later Mark was able to watch the process with the second caterpillar, who managed to hide itself at the cupola of the house, making himself (of course) very unphotographable.
The title comes from one of our very favorite Eric Carle books, and here are a few more that may suit your child's fancy: The Very Quiet Cricket The Grouchy Ladybug Brown Bear, Brown Bear From Head to Toe Dream Snow PS. The board book versions of these make GREAT baby gifts.Labels: children's books, Fall, monarch butterflies |

| It's Fall! |
So, it's Fall! That means mums and butterflies...
...a new purse for a new season (hush, Mark)...
...remedy bags (which Cole helped decorate) for his teachers, stuffed with things to keep the sniffles, sneezes, and sickness at bay (kleenex, chapstick, cough drops, hand sanitizer, etc.) I can't remember if I got this idea from Melissa Deakin or not...but as she's the queen of gifts I thought I'd link her site so you can get some sewing/crafts/card ideas for yourself.
...and finally, Miss Harper's accessory of the season -- knee socks.Labels: Fall, kids' crafts |

| Product Focus: Portraits: Custom Digital Mats |

These digital mats are just plain fun, which I think makes them SO appropriate for children's portraits. The mats come in 5 shapes: oval, horizontal oval, square, rectangle, and circle, and you can customize the nameplate with your color & text choices. Here's Gracie with the rectangle mat...
...and here's the oval, shown with a black frame...Simply place your matted image in a frame & hang it on your wall or place it on a shelf! It's as easy as that!Labels: Asheville portrait photography, products |

| They're back! |
I was worried about our little monarch friends. But Mark spotted multiple caterpillars on the milkweed plants today, so I guess they're just a little behind schedule compared to last year.
That big white blob in the front is my thumb - I was trying to give you a visual size comparison to the little guy on the leaf. It's sort of hard to hold a heavy camera/macro lens combination with one hand while holding my thumb out with the other hand...
...also hard is leaning over so that you're almost folded in half and holding your breath (to remain still) while waiting for an upside-down caterpillar to stop munching on the milkweed plant long enough to look up...on second thought I guess I really didn't need to lean over so much but I wanted to be able to relate to my subject.
As always you can track the monarchs' journey to Mexico here.

| Product Focus: wedding albums |
We currently offer 3 types of albums with our wedding packages. The first, pictured above, is an exquisite 8x10 flushmount album. It can be imprinted in gold or silver with your names & wedding date.
The pages of this flushmount album are very sturdy to protect your images from wear & tear. The photos in this album can be panoramic - extending all the way across a two-page spread - which is particularly nice for your favorite horizontal images. You can also display multiple images on each page as desired.
The pages of this album are bound just like a book. This album comes in a really nice array of different fabrics and textures to match the colors of your wedding day as well as reflect your personal style, and includes a presentation box.
Our second album is a ribbon-bound album that also comes in an array of fabrics & ribbon choices. At 10x13, it's slightly larger than the flushmount album.
Your favorite prints are permanently mounted on matted pages. Note the neat deckled/torn edge to the pages, too.
I love the ribbon! This album also includes a matching custom-made presentation box.
And finally, these little cuties are included in our base package for 2009. Because everyone needs an album to show off their favorite images! This album is 6x9, which could fit right in your purse if you have a purse like mine. These albums include 30 5x7 prints of your choice, as well as a smaller image on the cover.
The ribbon around the album slips off easily without being untied. Your prints are mounted directly to the page and protected by a sheer parchment paper.
The best part about these albums (besides the sweet size) is that they are custom-made based on your desired color/fabric choices!Labels: products |

| Alice the camel had two humps... |
I have that annoying, repetitive song in my head now...and I thought those long hairs were her eyelashes at first but on closer inspection I'm thinking eyebrows?
I took the kids to the Mountain State Fair at some point this past week. They had a good time. I had...an okay time. It's just not the same thing as the Minnesota State Fair, though it was loud and noisy and warm. But they enjoyed feeding the animals and sitting in the Fire Ranger's helicopter (which remained on the ground) and the ferris wheel (which was a little high for my taste) and the camel rides. I was a little freaked out about Harper sitting on the camel at first but she is a daredevil and had no problems with it. Also, when I asked her to hold my hand on the ferris wheel she said, "No, mommy." She's all heart. Anyway, that was the fair experience this year...all in all, probably still better than getting drenched last year.Labels: Cole, Harper |

Baby Maisy is all grown up! Okay, maybe not allll grown up yet, but she's officially 1 year old! Check out those beautiful blue eyes!
Maisy is what I'd call primly cute. She sizes you up first, and then decides if she'd like to share her happy, funny countenance with you...

| if you need a wedding planner/coordinator |
If you happen to be in need of a wedding or event planner/coordinator/day-of director in the Asheville area, this post is for you. We've had the opportunity to work with Emily of Occasions by Emily twice this year (coincidentally, both times for brides named Rebecca.)

Emily is on the ball, completely competent, and sweet, too. I thought these photos were pretty indicative of her style. She always makes sure to take care of her brides...
...and at the receptions she is on the ball! We appreciate the fact that she not only takes care of the bride & groom, guests, food, drinks, cakes, decor and event staff, but she also manages to look after the photographers, florists, and bands, too. So if you need some input for planning your destination wedding here in Asheville, or just want to be able to defer the stress to someone else on your wedding day, check out Emily.

PS. If you're planning a wedding at Richmond Hill or Claxton Farm, don't fret, because those women (Samantha at Richmond Hill, and Micah at Claxton) are on top of their game, too.Labels: Asheville wedding photography, Asheville wedding planners |

| Ashlyn & Kevin | September 6th |
Sigh....how I love a beautiful wedding. This one had it all - a sweet, emotional couple, a beautiful setting, perfect light, and wonderful event staff. It was just the absolute right combination of elements for a wedding day. Combine that with the fact that this was the first wedding after our August break, and well, you're going to see a lot of photos!
Location was very important to Ashlyn & Kevin. You can see that reflected not only in Kevin's custom-made map cufflinks, but also in the fact that they chose Asheville, (and specifically, Claxton Farm) for their wedding day celebration. They, and their family and friends, came from all across the country just for this event!
Ashlyn took a last-minute survey of everything before putting her dress on at the Farm. Here she is with her vibrant bouquet, courtesy of Janet over at the Enchanted Florist.
Personally, I love a windswept veil, and Ashlyn's veil definitely had a mind of its own!
A hug from dad right before the ceremony...
...a little flower lovin' for the goats from the flower girl...

The setting was truly gorgeous!

A few photos during the vows...

The glow of the setting sun...
...and a jumping shot, just for Ashlyn!
After dinner they danced under the light of the moon to a blue grass band.
And finally, a collage of details from their day.Labels: Asheville wedding photography, Claxton Farm |

| The dining room |
On one of our free Saturdays in August we decided to go ahead and paint the formal dining room (this is the room that will eventually have crown molding and a chair rail come November.)
When we first moved in the room was painted beige (the whole house was beige -- we called it paint-sucking beige because we needed at least 2 coats of paint to cover everywhere we painted...and we painted everywhere.) Here's the photo from the realty place of the room before we moved in....
We're not really beige people, so in our attempt to liven things up we went for big and bold and painted the room orange. Sort of a rusty orange, based on a shade of Bazzill if you're a scrapbooker. I can't find a photo of the whole room so this shot of the doorway leading into the kitchen (and adjacent from our brown bathroom) will have to do...I'm pretty sure you get the idea. Orange.
Now, the thing about a bright color on the walls is that it tends to demand your attention. Which is fine, except we got tired of it (okay, when I say "we" I mean I got tired of it.) Also, the dark color made the room look smaller. So when I was thinking about a new paint color I decided that I wanted something more neutral...something... like butter. Like, hold a stick of Land o' Lakes unsalted sweet cream butter to the walls and there you have it. Three coats of paint later there you have it (yes, three coats, but we didn't use primer - Mark did the trim and I rolled the whole thing since it was "my idea"- and we did it all in one uninterrupted day when the kids were with Mark's parents).

Butter! (Actually, the official paint swatch was Hinoki, though they had to mix it a little differently because I wanted the Harmony paint.) Interestingly enough, with the lighter color, our family who has been over to visit finally took notice of the light fixture, which has been up for about 5 months. I think it's because the light walls are more reflective. And the curtains have the same sort of detail as the light fixture... and yes, we're a little wood happy in the room, but we really like wood and don't mind mixing it up.
So, details... 3 cans of Harmony paint from Sherwin Williams in Hinoki - $110 (the 3rd can was on sale) 2 fabulous 6' wood benches - I just found them the Friday before we painted at the Antique Tobacco Barn and I got a good deal on them because I purchased the pair -- and they fit in the car - bonus! 2 new end chairs from the Pottery Barn outlet Curtains & rods and gold rings purchased last year at the Pottery Barn outlet 8' table by my fabulous brother-in-law - he made that for us right before we moved into the house because we knew the room needed a big table light fixture from The Home Depot artwork by Aaron
Speaking of artwork, you can see in the very first photo that there is a nice big wall on the right-hand side of the photo. This is going to be a photo wall! I'm so excited! But I have to plan it all out first and then Mark is super, super excited about hanging everything because he knows I go crazy if the frames aren't level. We're talking about 142" of horizontal space above the chair rail! Yay! Black frames, color photos... I'm planning on making a design in Photoshop first so that it's all to scale and I can order the right sizes of photos and frames. I will definitely show you when it's done...(November.)Labels: our house |

| this one |

She's insisted that her hair be in pigtails since last Friday, when Miss Jessica (our hairdresser) styled it that way for her.
She received the "good manners" award at school last Friday, and I resisted saying "really?!" when the teacher told me. (I wonder where those good manners are hiding most of the time?)

She is really worried there are sharks in her room, and the logical explanation that we're a good six hours from the ocean isn't doing anything to reassure her...
ETA: The skirt, which is just like the pink one she wore on Cole's first day of school, is on sale here. If they don't have the right size on sale, here's one that looks pretty similar.Labels: Harper |

| sweet E |
We were so happy when Gabby & Mike decided to make a pitstop in Asheville on their way to Arkansas, especially because it meant that we got to meet Evansen! The last time we saw Gabby she was pregnant with Ev, and here he's 6 months old already!
Is he not just chubby adorableness?
He winked and said, "Wanna see me roll over?" (I know my mom's going to swoon over those big brown eyes when she sees this photo...she has brown hair & brown eyes and 3 children and 2 grandchildren with blonde hair & blue eyes, so she has a special love for the brown-eyed babes.)
I think this next series is pretty indicative of the little guy's personality...

 Love that dimpled grin!
And this one, to me, seems oh-so-Gabby.

Finally, a little family lovin' - Evansen is unquestionably one loved lil' boy.

Gabby, Mike, and E, we hope you're having a great time on your trip! Feel free to stop by on your way back home!Labels: Asheville baby photography, Asheville portrait photography |

| The Flower Carpet |
I had some time to kill this morning after dropping off Harper and waiting for a particular store to open at 10am, so I decided to take a little jaunt over to the Biltmore Estate to check out their Flower Carpet. It was pretty quiet as the house and grounds had just opened at 9am, so it almost (almost) felt like I had the place to myself...well, okay, to myself and the other 50-100 early birds out and about.

So here's a little peek at the Carpet for you... it was fun to give myself a few creative exercises to get geared up again for our next streak of weddings!
ETA: a few more photos

Hummingbirds, that is...we have 2 or 3 that are constantly vying for the feeder...they buzz right by us during our lunches and dinners on the deck, and then return to their perches in the neighboring trees to await our retreat.Labels: summer |
