Happy Halloween!

A garden sprite just scampered out our front door...wearing part of last year's costume and part of this year's costume (the only difference between the two is that one is purple and one is pink) and skeleton pajamas to boot. If you see anyone Halloweening out early tonight that would be us, because Harper is very much afraid of the dark.

Nicole & Bill | October 25th

We were back at Richmond Hill Inn for our last wedding in October. Meet Bill...

...and Nicole...

...and Bill's sweet children. Here's Nicole giving them last-minute hugs and reassurances, as a new family was formed this day as well.

During the ceremony...

Did you notice that flying insect right beside Nicole in the previous photo? Yeah, that bee had a really unfortunate sense of timing, which occurred right when Bill put his hand on Nicole's waist to kiss his new bride.

Thanks to quick medical attention from Samantha at Richmond Hill, as well as Nicole, Bill was soon smiling again...

...and he even kissed Nicole again! (several times)

After a little knife-wielding...

...the dancing started.

And they celebrated the night away.

good grief

Briefly this morning I thought maybe I was back in Minnesota...hello, snow? In October?

She really wanted to catch a snowflake...

...and then she finally did.

This is the "okay, mommy, time to go back inside" look.

PS. No worries - it'll be back in the 60s again this weekend.

PPS. The coat is from mini boden, courtesy of Nana (Mark's mom.) Pretty much anything with polka dots has Harper's name written all over it.

A Fall Family Fun session (FFF)

This is Annalie. She likes soft pink dresses...

...purple rompers and butterfly hats. (She does not, however, appreciate clothing changes oh-so-much.)

She thinks her daddy is very funny...

...and loves her mommy very much...

...and she'd really, really, really like to eat those leaves in front of her.

Rubylicious - 2.5 weeks old

Oooh, yeah...that cute! Except...

...well, she wasn't that happy to see me.

So we compromised. I didn't call her "Rubylicious" anymore (as anyone can plainly see, her namy is RUBY.)

...and after a new diaper and a little bit to eat she bestowed her happy countenance upon me. As long as she was facing the light...

...and I didn't put the blanket in her face or make her sneeze...

...and I let her stick her feet out because she'd just been through a 44-hour labor a few weeks ago and after being wedged in the womb for that long she wasn't going to bend her knees ever again...

...and we had to play hide 'n seek.

So all in all, a pretty good visit.

Sarah & Ryan | October 18th

We joined Sarah & Ryan on a gorgeous fall day (slightly breezy but sunny) at The Point in Mooresville, NC.

At exactly 12:29pm we encountered them both waiting... (I love when events line up like that!)

But soon Ryan was ready. (Really, he did a lot in between those 2 photos, even if it just looks like he was sitting a lot.)

...and then Sarah was ready.

Their ceremony was held on the Function Lawn overlooking Lake Norman...(how I love that the shadow of their kiss forms a heart!)

We've taken a bunch of group photos lately at weddings so I thought I'd showcase one here. This the first formal photo we take after the ceremony, and it usually works well for groups of 40-125 guests or so. We like to require active participation, which includes cheering, clapping and kissing, in addition to the smiling.

A couple of loosely-posed portraits -- "stand here and chat" -- we keep it simple.

The reception was held at the Meeting House. Sarah did a terrific job with the decor, which I'll show in my next post.

Ryan & his mom...

...and Sarah and her mom...

...and finally, a shot of Sarah's father's ring, tied into her bouquet and carried with her everywhere in memory of him.

at the Arboretum

Since the kids didn't have school yesterday we headed over to the NC Arboretum to soak up some color.

This photo is so accurate...

Obviously, I had to institute a bribe. This time around it was: if you smile for me, you can take your turn behind the camera, too. (Photos by Cole & Harper -- yes, I should have ditched the sippy cup. And yes, I set up the camera first -- so not just any 3 year old can take my job...yet.)

(Photos by Cole & Harper.)

...and the reward for such fun...

So worth it!

love & lashes

One last photo from Catherine's gallery, which I finished editing tonight...some people might see windblown hair but I see 3 generations of love.

The Pumpkin Patch

It wouldn't be October without a visit to the pumpkin patch! Not really a patch, per se, but more like a Methodist church roadside stand.... This boy has been so, so sweet & good lately.

And this one? Well....rather the opposite...

celebrating 10 years...

I moved here exactly 10 years ago today. In celebration, I took a drive along the Parkway this morning, and thought I'd share with you one of my favorite spots -- if I were a cat I'd curl up in the grass right under those sunbeams. (At a safe distance from the road, of course!)

Miss Catherine - 6 months old

Sweet, happy, AND she likes stripes - now that's my kinda girl! If you look closely, you'll see 2 little teeth popping out at the bottom of her mouth.

You've actually already "met" Catherine when she was nine days old. It is such a privilege to be able to document her growth! I can't believe she's so grown up already!

She's also the perfect pumpkin hat model, if you ask me.

Our baby butterflies

Okay, technically I don't know if butterflies have a "baby" stage, but since they were born yesterday and we witnessed their first flights I'm calling them babies. This first shot was taken at 9:30 am, and again, I shot it through the glass...

At 11:30 am... we missed the actual hatching but caught this right before we left to have lunch with Cole at school.

At 1:27pm after we'd returned from lunch... Harper said, "He has a friend!"

At 2:33pm, shortly after Cole got off the school bus...

At 5:06pm, right after Mark arrived home from work, this one decided to climb out the hard way...

...we ended up helping it a bit since the edges of the case were slippery...but then it didn't want to let go of us.

Drying off a little more....

...Mark took these last two shots while it perched on my arm.

Bye bye, butterflies!

Lauren & Aaron | October 4th

The hair...

...the hands...

...the dancing shoes.

Aaron's entrance (that's his dad playing the bagpipes, by the way)...

...Lauren's entrance...

...and some sweet light beneath the pavilion.

We could get used to this whole palm tree thing - especially with a little palm-pierced sunlight for portraits!

Aaron & Lauren performed two choreographed dances during the reception -- they were awesome! I loved the lean...

...and the tango.

And we must not forget the ice cream bar - ooooh, chocolate! Good times for everyone.

butterfly update

Just in case you're keeping track, here's the current state of our butterflies...
(I shot this through the glass of their terrarium, which is why it looks a little fuzzy.)

Lauren & Aaron | rehearsal dinner

Why yes, we were at the beach last weekend. Actually, we were just very briefly on the actual beach. Most of our time was spent in Sunset Beach, NC documenting Aaron & Lauren's wedding weekend extravaganza.

We noticed right away that Lauren & Aaron had each surrounded themselves with a great bunch of friends. Here's Lauren & her bridesmaids workin' the photo booth...

...and Aaron & his groomsmen. They didn't even toss him in the pool, my friends.

A sweet pre-wedding day kiss by the happy couple...

...and finally, an unobstructed view of the moon at sunset (with no mountains to get in our way!)

Jessica & Michael | September 27

Getting ready...

Getting used to the camera...

Getting a little anxious...

...and a little teary-eyed.

Oh, how I love the light in September, especially during a sunset ceremony.

A little toasting...

...and cupcake carousing (oh, right in the ear)...

...and finally, late-night birthday wishes for Jessica's younger brother, celebrating his sweet 16th.

About Us
Hi! I'm Joanna, author of this journal. My husband Mark and I are photographers in Asheville, North Carolina. Most recently we collaborated on a 12 week beginner photography course, the contents of which you can find
    • here.
    • The name of our company, Tuesday's Frog, is based on an almost wordless children's book about frogs that go flying on lily pads one night. We love it because it tells a story in pictures. Cole & Harper are our children, and frequent (though not always willing) photography subjects. So here you'll find not only the story of our lives, but of those we've photographed as well. We'd love to tell your story, too!
