  • I distinctly remember the Reading Rainbow episode where LeVar Burton read “A Chair for My Mother” (circa 1984.) After re-reading the book recently I knew that I had to include it as one of my all-time favorites! There’s just something about the flowery pink chair that sticks in my mind…and, digging deeper, there are great lessons in this book for kids (and adults) about overcoming loss, the warm embrace of community, and a pervasive stick-to-it-ive-ness that is perhaps lacking nowadays.

Imagine my surprise when I googled its author and illustrator, Vera B. Williams, and discovered that she’d lived in Black Mountain, NC (just down the road from us) for many years! She graduated with a degree in graphic art from Black Mountain College, and spent several years in Black Mountain raising her children. That’s pretty cool! Also cool is the fact that A Chair for My Mother is a Caldecott Honor book.

    Enjoy your day!

(I don’t know what type of flower these are but I think they look like big, purple dandelions.)

  • Miss M at four and one half

What struck me most about photographing Miss Maisy this time around is just how big she is getting! Oh my goodness! I feel a little like Peter Pan, in that I don’t think kids are really supposed to grow up so quickly!

Just look at this sweet girl…

…ready to take on the world. : )
