The kids attended art camp through Roots + Wings a few weeks ago at the Orange Peel in downtown Asheville. What I liked about the location was the fact that they took daily “field trips” downtown, exploring art galleries, meeting locals (including a famous counting dog) and drawing inspiration (literally) from the city.

Their favorite day by far was costume day – Cole went as Dr. Who and Harper’s a “50s girl” (her words.)

The day after art camp was over they spent almost the entire afternoon outside – in the sweltering heat, no less – in the shade of the back deck experimenting with oil pastels & watercolors. I like that they learned something, too!

Harper was sick in early February with a nasty mix of illnesses which kept her home from school for an entire week. After reading “The Magic School Bus Fights Germs” many, many times during this week she became more curious about germs, and wanted to know what they really looked like. So, after some internet searching, I managed to find a 1934 article from Popular Science entitled “Microbe Hunting with Your Microscope.” The article included black and white bacteria images, and here, belatedly, are her painterly interpretations.
