Deep Summer

Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability. — Sam Keen

I subscribe to Real Simple's Daily Thought, and I especially liked the quote they emailed yesterday -- my two favorite parts being the term "deep summer" and the bit about laziness. Which is why at around 5pm each day, while we wait for Mark to come home from work, you'll find us outside on the hammock enjoying the shade of the backyard. I'm usually reading a book while the kids are playing on the playground, though they'll occasionally indulge me by coming by for a swing. To me that's what summer is really about -- it gives you time to just be.

sunflowers

I have been smitten with sunflowers for a long, long time. So when Rebecca (just married this past Saturday) mentioned during the consultation that there would be sunflowers in bloom at her reception, I was very excited! The reception took place at a private estate in Flat Rock, and there were, indeed, sunflowers, tomato plants, pumpkin vines, and, oh yeah, beautiful guests and drinks and music and food. I quickly snapped these shots while the guests were eating.

And here's the view from the gardens of the reception tent. It was a beautiful sultry summer wedding - I can't wait to show you the rest of the photos!

in case you don't like spiders

At least they come with a warning symbol...

Mean mama spider. One day this past spring I picked up a rock, only to discover a black widow clinging to the bottom of it. I immediately dropped the rock and ran to tell Mark. The first thing he asked me was if I'd killed the spider. Umm, no. In the "fight or flight" theory I picked flight. Same thing with this bugger here. I got a little too close to it while weeding and immediately notified Mark that I wanted it killed ASAP. He just had to photograph it first, though. I would so much rather photograph flowers...

summer days

Summer days are all about finding ways to keep cool...searching for rocks in Cane Creek.

Happy 4th of July!

He's looking quite patriotic today, don't you think? (And just so you know, he styles himself. I only raise an eyebrow every now and then, such as the day he decided to wear two mismatched shoes to preschool...or the day he wore his bike helmet to run all our errands...)

speaking of butterflies...

We went back to the Nature Center today to check out the butterfly exhibit which opened over the weekend. So weird to think that we've been going to this exhibit since Cole was close to the same age that Harper is now! It's always fun, though, and we try to arrive right when the Center opens because the butterflies are still quite willing to be held.

PS. For those who asked, most of the close-up photos on the blog recently were taken with the Canon 100mm Macro.

Busy as a...

These little dudes sure have been busy!
So glad they're here to pollinate our world, though!

Poppies

Happy Friday!
I wrote that phrase in an email on Wednesday night around midnight, then woke up the next morning thinking, "Hang on - it's not Friday yet!" But NOW it is!
Obviously, I should not write emails at midnight. Enjoy the weekend!

almost summer!

After two weeks of running around the kids & I were so happy to just hang out in our front yard this morning.

Our 3-season cutting garden is proving to be a good purchase!

I'm so proud of this little guy (I say little but he's like a foot shorter than me, okay, maybe 18 inches) because he's learning to ride his bike without training wheels! Love the tongue sticking out - a sign of true determination.

And this one...well, she's going to be 3 next month. Need I say more?

more scenes from the front yard
Fueling up before heading to Mexico.

This one was actually on our front porch...

...freaking out slightly about this one! He's taken over one of our daisy plants.

I have to say that we're very excited about this last series -- Mark spotted it under our bird bath (perhaps it was drawn to Harper's pretty flowers floating in the water?)

the weekend in photos

We doped Mark up on Dayquil this past weekend and headed to the Apple Festival in Hendersonville. We've been enjoying the fruits of our labor ever since (and Mark is finally feeling better...something to do with the apples, perhaps?)

Harper thought that our bird bath was looking a little bare, so she decided to make it "pretty" by plucking all of the blooms off our mums. The bird bath did, indeed, look pretty, though I'm not sure what the birds thought.

I rarely say this about bugs but we are glad to have a bunch of these monarch caterpillars visiting us. Mark discovered them on the milkweed plant as he was weeding the front garden...and I was sitting inside enjoying the airconditioning...

We counted at least 10 this morning -- here's one of the smaller residents.

Then there are these guys -- milkweed aphids, apparently. I think we need to invite a few ladybugs over for lunch!

Anyway, that was our weekend. Pretty laid back and restful. I hope you had a great one!
