emerald green

Finishing my thought from the other day...I love this shade of green, too!

Thanks, Laura & Travis!

This shimmery lil' note arrived late last week from Laura and Travis. Laura has the prettiest handwriting! Here's an excerpt: Joanna & Mark...we loved how you were able to find "us" and bring that out in the photos. We appreciate how easy to work with and energetic you both were and we're so thankful for all of the stress you took off our shoulders!

Their note also reminded me that I wanted to show you an inspiration board of the colors for their wedding. I loved the combination of navy blue with that crisp, cool green in their wedding details (particularly the ribbons around the cake and the napkins!) We've actually been seeing a lot of green this year. I'll have to do another post about that...

Thank YOU, Laura & Travis!

Rebecca & John | July 26th, 2008

First, a few details -- the hair...

...the beautiful bouquet...

...and the handsome, happy groom. He was so calm and so ready to be married!

Rebecca & Henry outside the church, just before he walked her down the aisle.

It was such a sweet ceremony...

...with a few happy tears.

Talk about drivin' through downtown Hendersonville in style!

Ah yes, the sunflowers!

A few reception details for you - the theme was birds. Rebecca had a feather in her bouquet as well.

During the dance...

...and the departure. I wish you could see this photo larger to really get an idea of how much birdseed was flying through the air!

Rebecca & John | rehearsal dinner

I wanted to talk about rehearsal dinners a bit, as we're covering a handful of them this year for our wedding couples. The thing I love most about them is that they are always brimming with emotion - you've just wrapped up a somewhat chaotic rehearsal and there's a lot of excitement and nervous energy in the air that comes about when you gather so many different people together. Add to that the anticipation of the big day just around the corner -- the culmination of many months of planning/stress/worry -- plus good food, wine, memory-laden slideshows, well-spoken toasts, and, by the end of the evening, a little bit of plain old exhaustion.

At rehearsal dinners we also enjoy the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the bride & groom's family and friends, who will be seeing quite a lot of us the following day. One way we do this is by setting up a "photo booth" where all the guests are invited (or sometimes forced!) to ham it up in front of the camera. The results are fun photos for the bride & groom as well as a shared camaraderie with the wedding guests.

Seriously, rehearsal dinners are just plain fun!

PS. Rebecca & John's rehearsal dinner took place at La Riserva in Hendersonville, NC. Another location we enjoyed recently for a rehearsal dinner was Cafe on the Square in downtown Asheville.

Laura & Travis | July 12th, 2008
One of my favorite things about importing our CF cards into the computer is seeing what photos Mark has taken while I was shooting. Because our editing program syncs all the cards according to the time, we find fun things like these two photos, taken exactly 5 seconds apart...

At four minutes after 3 Laura was receiving some assistance with her necklace...

...while Travis was perhaps needing some assistance with his tie. When you're apart for the whole day I think it's really nice for the bride & groom to be able to see how the other has been spending their time.

Laura and her dad before the ceremony...

...and shedding a few tears while walking down the aisle.

The happy, happy couple!

After the ceremony in Hendersonville we headed over to Kenmure for portraits by the lake.

The first dance...

...one of Mark's signature shots.

Oh yeah, there was a lot of fun to be had at this reception!

Departure by bubble.

Laura's Bridal Portraits
On Saturday Laura & Travis celebrated their wedding in a very fun, very big way with their family & friends. I'll post photos of their wedding later this week, but in the meantime here are a few of Laura's bridal portraits taken a few weeks ago at Kenmure.

A full-length shot so you can see her beautiful dress...Mind you, she's about 6ft tall...and she rocked that dress!

This one greeted the guests at the reception on Saturday night.

And here's a not-very-formal but oh-so-Laura shot that I love. Such a happy bride!

Rebecca & Kenton | June 21st, 2008

Kenton & Rebecca opted for to see each other before the wedding.

After a few minutes alone they indulged us with a few photos before being whisked away downtown.

The wedding & reception were held at On Broadway, and were coordinated by Emily McCollin from Occasions by Emily. Rebecca & the bridesmaids in waiting...

...and a little detail during the ceremony.

The best part about being downtown? Alleyways and streets, of course!

(And courteous traffic -- we thank you!)

Of course you must kiss on the street!

A parting shot from the first dance.

Paxton & Beth | June 14th, 2008
One of the things I love about photographing weddings is that each wedding is different. Granted, they tend to follow the same order of the day, and we did hear the song "Carolina Girls" about 500 times last year. But, case in point, Paxton & Beth were married at Lake Eden last Saturday, which is the same place where Rob & Denise exchanged vows the week previously. But even though the weddings were in the same location, they were completely different. I love that. I love how each wedding is unique based on the couple's individual personality, style, and choices. Here's a glimpse of Beth & Paxton's day.

And yes, sometimes we do repeat ourselves, too, but this photo makes me smile!

I love happy kisses!

See this cake? It looks innocent enough, doesn't it....

...but not for long!

An inside & outside view for you -- this wedding was coordinated by Jennifer King of Verge Events.

And finally, a late-night kiss before heading off on their honeymoon.

Denise & Rob | 06.07.08

Denise made her own dress! I especially loved the buttons down the back and the flare at the bottom.

Maybe, possibly, just a little bit nervous...right, Rob?

Guess who else was a little nervous - the very adorable (I mean handsome) ring bearer. He took his job very seriously.

A little close-up during the ceremony.

Oh-so-happy now!

After the ceremony the veil came off and the boots went on...

...just in time for lots & lots of terrific dancing.

Tom & Libby | May 31st, 2008

Meet Libby...

...and Tom.

On the last day of May they met in the garden at Richmond Hill Inn and exchanged vows in front of their family and friends, surrounded by dogwoods, poppies, a few butterflies, and bouquets of lilacs that matched the bridesmaids oh-so-well.

After some kissing...(a scalloped veil - oh my!)

...and cake (they like their cake)...

...they returned outside to dance the evening away. Such a simply lovely way to say "I do!"

Caroline & Tim | May 24th, 2008

Caroline & Tim were married at a vineyard this past Saturday. While Caroline got ready at the house at the vineyard, Mark and the guys hung out in downtown Landrum. It was slightly hot and flat there, but they managed to look cool.

It goes without saying how much I loved this veil, right? Breathtaking!

Often we like the-moment-right-before-the-kiss just as much as the first kiss.

After the ceremony and family portraits we headed down the road to spend a few minutes with the bride & groom.

Caroline surveying the festivities in her second veil of the day (I loved this one, too!)

Is there anything better than a beautiful sunset to complement a wonderful wedding day?

Michelle & Stephen | May 17th, 2008

A happy (and a little anxious) bride...

...a calm groom.

A bright, beautiful blue day (not a cloud in the sky.)
A springtime garden alive with fragrance and color, music and cheers.

A joyous couple enjoying a little time alone.

Well, sort of alone.

A yummy cake peering through the window...

...and a parting shot of the moon.

Jennifer & Jason | May 3rd, 2008

She said "jump!" and they did.

Then later they sang "Goin' to the Chapel" as we drove up the mountain, and prayed with her before they departed the bus.

She was serene the entire morning, completely confident in taking this step in her life.

In their lives...He saw her for the first time that day as she walked down the aisle.

...and then finally, they were together...

...saying vows and exchanging rings.

Finally, officially, and oh-so-happily husband and wife.

Megan & Garrett | April 27th, 2008
Sometimes when the weather calls for a 70% chance of rain and you've planned an outdoor wedding you've just got to go with the flow. And that's exactly what Megan & Garrett did this past Sunday! We overheard Garrett talking to Megan on the phone prior to the wedding, assuring her that it was clearing up. But Megan and her dad came prepared, just in case!

Their wedding took place in the Pavilion overlooking the beautiful Chimney Rock Mountains in Lake Lure, with the fog & low-lying clouds just enhancing the vista.

After Megan walked to the front of the Pavilion she looked around at the guests and then over at Garrett and then back at the guests and you could just feel how excited she was to be there - the joy of knowing your wedding day has finally arrived!

And sometimes the rain tapers off just in time to take some shots down by the river...

Megan & Garrett, we hope you're having a wonderful (warm, dry) time on your honeymoon cruise! We so enjoyed your beautiful day!

Know what I love?
Call me weird, but I love processing portrait orders!

It's definitely a hands-on process for us:

...taking orders and learning which images are our clients' favorites.

...working on the individual images, doing small edits to enhance them...things you wouldn't necessarily notice unless you hold your proof image and your finished image side by side. Making sure the images "pop."

...inspecting every portrait when it comes back from the lab, making sure it's just right (I'm such a perfectionist about that...it's hard for me to let the images go.)

...packaging up the orders prettily and sending them out.

...envisioning these photos -- memories -- on the walls of our clients' homes.

...knowing that you trust us to capture these images and provide the final products to you. That makes me so happy! It makes the work worth it.

I am so thankful to be working in such a fulfilling profession.
Thank you for allowing us to do so!

Rachael & Sean | December 21 | Montreat, NC
We were back at Gaither this past Friday for the wedding of Rachael and Sean.

While Rachael got ready in one of the classrooms above the church Sean was preparing to smile...a lot!

The ringbearer & flower girl were so cute!

Here Sarah Grace is getting some last-minute advice from her parents, Marc & Melissa. Rachael was actually a flower girl at Marc & Melissa's wedding so I think it was extra special for them to have Sarah Grace be the flower girl for this wedding! In addition, Marc & Melissa run The Red Radish catering company, and they provided the food for this wedding. (They make the best food ever(!!), and we were very fortunate to have them cater our own wedding, though they don't do weddings anymore.)

Rachael's father (who happened to be one of Mark's professors when Mark attended Montreat) served double-duty as dad and pastor for the service.

I love how the church was decorated for Christmas!

Loved this one of this little girl trying to get a better view of the ceremony.

After some portraits we headed to the fellowship hall for dining & dancing.

Thank you, Rachael & Sean, for allowing us to be a part of your exciting day! We hope you're having a wonderful (warm) honeymoon. Merry Christmas!

Jenn & Kyle | 11.17 | Montreat, NC

I know you're probably tired of dress photos but I really liked the leaves outside the window (not to mention Jenn's pretty dress...)

...as well as the "fluff" underneath!

So what do the guys do while the girls are getting ready? Blow off steam, of course...and maybe fake a singalong in one of the classrooms beside the church.

Jenn & Kyle were married in an evening ceremony at 6:30 pm at Gaither Chapel.

Upon seeing the bride for the first time...

I think, just maybe, the bride was happy!

Another good reason to get married in the evening -- a chance to kiss under the light of the moon.

Here's the happy couple entering their reception, which was held at Coleman Place in Asheville.

First dance...

Jenn and Kyle have known each other for years, and on display at the reception were just a few of the hundreds (thousands?) of letters they have written to each other. Below is a journal entry by Kyle as well as Jen's letter the day Kyle proposed to her.

The youngest guests always capture our attention -- this baby girl is just 4 weeks old.

The couple (on the run again) as they exit the reception. The sparklers were in honor of their engagement on the 4th of July.

Thank you, Kyle & Jenn, for allowing us to be a part of your long-awaited and wonderful day! We hope you are enjoying Jamaica!

Rob & Annie | 10.27 | Highland Lake Inn

It's perfectly okay with us if it rains all week (as it did last week) as long as the weather cooperates on the weekend! Last Saturday, for example, was the perfect Fall day -- the colors were at their peak and there was just the slightest breeze in the air to give Annie's veil a little lift. Not to mention their lakeside ceremony was lovely! Annie and Rob, we hope you are having a wonderful, relaxing time in Mexico! Thanks so much for allowing us to be a part of your day!

WPJA recognition

Sarah posted a comment on the blog today and reminded me that I'd won a 10th place award in the Cake Cutting category in the most recent quarterly WPJA contest. So I thought I'd share a little screen shot with you here. (Forgive me if I'm a few weeks late!) This photo was taken during Colleen & Andy's wedding back in July. For some reason, I'm thinking they're not going to want an 8x10 of this particular photo, though... I suppose I might let them choose a different photo as my way of saying thanks!

Heather & Jerry | October 7th
Heather and Jerry were married on a lovely afternoon this past Sunday at Central United Methodist Church in Asheville.

The flowers were provided by Aria Floral out of Burnsville, NC. I love the wooden drawer they used to deliver the flowers!

Just having some post-processing fun with this one...I loved the red!

Heather's dad pinned on Jerry's boutonnière.

Jerry's daughter, the lovely Elyssa.

April & Craig | September 15
April and Craig were married at Pack Place in downtown Asheville. Pack Place is a collective of artistic endeavours -- there's a theatre, a children's health/science place, and an art museum among other things. (We saw an Ansel Adams exhibit there a few years ago that was awesome!) So the first thing we saw when we walked inside were these beautiful butterflies, decorated by children, streaming in from the window.

We were able to spend a good portion of the day with April & Craig, which involved observing the setup for the reception. Here's one of the table centerpieces.

After setting everything up, Mark headed out with Craig to a nearby hotel while I followed the girls back to their loft downtown.

A little pre-ceremony champagne...

Coincidentally, the boys were doing the very same thing!

We loved having the opportunity to take photos downtown! A bridal party must always stop traffic!

The ceremony took place in the courtyard beside Pack Place... so we were able to take a few gritty, urban sunset photos outside before it began.

Laura & Lance | September 8th, 2007
Last Saturday we headed to Fairview on a misty mountain morning...

Just through that break in the trees we came across this...

Here's Laura admiring her bouquet...

...and peeking around the corner to catch a glimpse of the start of the ceremony.

Missoula, the ring bearer. She was very well behaved!

Laura, making her grand entrance atop Sadie.

...escorted down the aisle by her Uncle Gary.

Such a bright, blue, beautiful day!

Nikki & John | 8.11.07
A few weeks ago we headed up to Highlands for Nikki & John's wedding in the mountains. Such a pretty place! (And as a little bonus -- cooler weather!)

The bride...

...the groom and his dad.

Don't these two look like TROUBLE? (Nikki's brother & grandfather)

See what I mean? Here's Nikki's grandpa offering her the keys to the car in case she was having second thoughts!

But thankfully she stayed. ; ) Looking gorgeous as she waits.

The ceremony took place on the golf course at the Highlands Cove Country Club.

Nikki & John | ceremony and reception

A stolen moment directly after the ceremony...

Taken during the formals...

Nikki and John had a jazz band at their reception and it sure made for some great times on the dance floor! Nikki's grandparents used to dance in Chicago (when they were slightly younger) and they still look oh-so-good together.

Father and daughter...

...and father and daughter.

John and Nikki, thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your wedding! We were so glad to make the trip to Highlands and celebrate with the two of you and your families and friends! (We're also very glad that Hurricane Dean didn't interrupt your honeymoon!) We wish you the best!

Lauren & Jeff | ceremony and reception

After a happy ceremony we headed to The Farm for a fun reception.
Lauren & Jeff arrived in style in Lauren's dad's '68 Nova.

The first dance...

A stolen moment outside.

This photo makes us laugh. Jeff was trying to get his ring off to accommodate our request to take photos of the rings, but it was slightly humid outside!

"A" pretty cake!

All in all, a beautiful way to spend a summer's eve.

Jeff and Lauren, we hope you are having a wonderful time on your honeymoon! We wish you all the best as you settle into your new home and life together in DC. Thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your day!

Hayes & Mike | ceremony
Such a beautiful ceremony!

After the ceremony we snuck them away for a few shots on the golf course. When Hayes first said she wanted photos of the tiger paw on the 17th hole we were envisioning something little..but the tiger paw is actually quite large and directly behind them -- the four sand traps are its claws.

The rings...
