| Thanks, Laura & Travis! |

This shimmery lil' note arrived late last week from Laura and Travis. Laura has the prettiest handwriting! Here's an excerpt: Joanna & Mark...we loved how you were able to find "us" and bring that out in the photos. We appreciate how easy to work with and energetic you both were and we're so thankful for all of the stress you took off our shoulders!
Their note also reminded me that I wanted to show you an inspiration board of the colors for their wedding. I loved the combination of navy blue with that crisp, cool green in their wedding details (particularly the ribbons around the cake and the napkins!) We've actually been seeing a lot of green this year. I'll have to do another post about that...

Thank YOU, Laura & Travis!Labels: thanks, weddings |

| Rebecca & John | rehearsal dinner |

I wanted to talk about rehearsal dinners a bit, as we're covering a handful of them this year for our wedding couples. The thing I love most about them is that they are always brimming with emotion - you've just wrapped up a somewhat chaotic rehearsal and there's a lot of excitement and nervous energy in the air that comes about when you gather so many different people together. Add to that the anticipation of the big day just around the corner -- the culmination of many months of planning/stress/worry -- plus good food, wine, memory-laden slideshows, well-spoken toasts, and, by the end of the evening, a little bit of plain old exhaustion.

At rehearsal dinners we also enjoy the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the bride & groom's family and friends, who will be seeing quite a lot of us the following day. One way we do this is by setting up a "photo booth" where all the guests are invited (or sometimes forced!) to ham it up in front of the camera. The results are fun photos for the bride & groom as well as a shared camaraderie with the wedding guests.

Seriously, rehearsal dinners are just plain fun!
PS. Rebecca & John's rehearsal dinner took place at La Riserva in Hendersonville, NC. Another location we enjoyed recently for a rehearsal dinner was Cafe on the Square in downtown Asheville.Labels: weddings |

| Laura's Bridal Portraits |
On Saturday Laura & Travis celebrated their wedding in a very fun, very big way with their family & friends. I'll post photos of their wedding later this week, but in the meantime here are a few of Laura's bridal portraits taken a few weeks ago at Kenmure.
A full-length shot so you can see her beautiful dress...Mind you, she's about 6ft tall...and she rocked that dress!
This one greeted the guests at the reception on Saturday night.
 And here's a not-very-formal but oh-so-Laura shot that I love. Such a happy bride!Labels: weddings |

| Paxton & Beth | June 14th, 2008 |
One of the things I love about photographing weddings is that each wedding is different. Granted, they tend to follow the same order of the day, and we did hear the song "Carolina Girls" about 500 times last year. But, case in point, Paxton & Beth were married at Lake Eden last Saturday, which is the same place where Rob & Denise exchanged vows the week previously. But even though the weddings were in the same location, they were completely different. I love that. I love how each wedding is unique based on the couple's individual personality, style, and choices. Here's a glimpse of Beth & Paxton's day.
And yes, sometimes we do repeat ourselves, too, but this photo makes me smile!

 I love happy kisses!

See this cake? It looks innocent enough, doesn't it....
 ...but not for long!
An inside & outside view for you -- this wedding was coordinated by Jennifer King of Verge Events.

And finally, a late-night kiss before heading off on their honeymoon.Labels: weddings |

| Megan & Garrett | April 27th, 2008 |
Sometimes when the weather calls for a 70% chance of rain and you've planned an outdoor wedding you've just got to go with the flow. And that's exactly what Megan & Garrett did this past Sunday! We overheard Garrett talking to Megan on the phone prior to the wedding, assuring her that it was clearing up. But Megan and her dad came prepared, just in case!

Their wedding took place in the Pavilion overlooking the beautiful Chimney Rock Mountains in Lake Lure, with the fog & low-lying clouds just enhancing the vista.

After Megan walked to the front of the Pavilion she looked around at the guests and then over at Garrett and then back at the guests and you could just feel how excited she was to be there - the joy of knowing your wedding day has finally arrived!

And sometimes the rain tapers off just in time to take some shots down by the river... Megan & Garrett, we hope you're having a wonderful (warm, dry) time on your honeymoon cruise! We so enjoyed your beautiful day! Labels: weddings |

| Know what I love? |
Call me weird, but I love processing portrait orders!

It's definitely a hands-on process for us:
...taking orders and learning which images are our clients' favorites.
...working on the individual images, doing small edits to enhance them...things you wouldn't necessarily notice unless you hold your proof image and your finished image side by side. Making sure the images "pop."
...inspecting every portrait when it comes back from the lab, making sure it's just right (I'm such a perfectionist about that...it's hard for me to let the images go.)
...packaging up the orders prettily and sending them out.
...envisioning these photos -- memories -- on the walls of our clients' homes.
...knowing that you trust us to capture these images and provide the final products to you. That makes me so happy! It makes the work worth it.
I am so thankful to be working in such a fulfilling profession. Thank you for allowing us to do so!

| Rachael & Sean | December 21 | Montreat, NC |
We were back at Gaither this past Friday for the wedding of Rachael and Sean.

While Rachael got ready in one of the classrooms above the church Sean was preparing to smile...a lot!

The ringbearer & flower girl were so cute!

Here Sarah Grace is getting some last-minute advice from her parents, Marc & Melissa. Rachael was actually a flower girl at Marc & Melissa's wedding so I think it was extra special for them to have Sarah Grace be the flower girl for this wedding! In addition, Marc & Melissa run The Red Radish catering company, and they provided the food for this wedding. (They make the best food ever(!!), and we were very fortunate to have them cater our own wedding, though they don't do weddings anymore.)

Rachael's father (who happened to be one of Mark's professors when Mark attended Montreat) served double-duty as dad and pastor for the service.

I love how the church was decorated for Christmas!

Loved this one of this little girl trying to get a better view of the ceremony.

After some portraits we headed to the fellowship hall for dining & dancing.

Thank you, Rachael & Sean, for allowing us to be a part of your exciting day! We hope you're having a wonderful (warm) honeymoon. Merry Christmas!Labels: weddings |

| Jenn & Kyle | 11.17 | Montreat, NC |
I know you're probably tired of dress photos but I really liked the leaves outside the window (not to mention Jenn's pretty dress...)
...as well as the "fluff" underneath!
So what do the guys do while the girls are getting ready? Blow off steam, of course...and maybe fake a singalong in one of the classrooms beside the church.

Jenn & Kyle were married in an evening ceremony at 6:30 pm at Gaither Chapel.

Upon seeing the bride for the first time...

I think, just maybe, the bride was happy!

Another good reason to get married in the evening -- a chance to kiss under the light of the moon.

Here's the happy couple entering their reception, which was held at Coleman Place in Asheville.

First dance...

Jenn and Kyle have known each other for years, and on display at the reception were just a few of the hundreds (thousands?) of letters they have written to each other. Below is a journal entry by Kyle as well as Jen's letter the day Kyle proposed to her.

The youngest guests always capture our attention -- this baby girl is just 4 weeks old.

The couple (on the run again) as they exit the reception. The sparklers were in honor of their engagement on the 4th of July.

Thank you, Kyle & Jenn, for allowing us to be a part of your long-awaited and wonderful day! We hope you are enjoying Jamaica!Labels: weddings |

| WPJA recognition |

Sarah posted a comment on the blog today and reminded me that I'd won a 10th place award in the Cake Cutting category in the most recent quarterly WPJA contest. So I thought I'd share a little screen shot with you here. (Forgive me if I'm a few weeks late!) This photo was taken during Colleen & Andy's wedding back in July. For some reason, I'm thinking they're not going to want an 8x10 of this particular photo, though... I suppose I might let them choose a different photo as my way of saying thanks!Labels: weddings |

| April & Craig | September 15 |
April and Craig were married at Pack Place in downtown Asheville. Pack Place is a collective of artistic endeavours -- there's a theatre, a children's health/science place, and an art museum among other things. (We saw an Ansel Adams exhibit there a few years ago that was awesome!) So the first thing we saw when we walked inside were these beautiful butterflies, decorated by children, streaming in from the window.

We were able to spend a good portion of the day with April & Craig, which involved observing the setup for the reception. Here's one of the table centerpieces.

After setting everything up, Mark headed out with Craig to a nearby hotel while I followed the girls back to their loft downtown.

A little pre-ceremony champagne...

Coincidentally, the boys were doing the very same thing!

We loved having the opportunity to take photos downtown! A bridal party must always stop traffic!

The ceremony took place in the courtyard beside Pack Place... so we were able to take a few gritty, urban sunset photos outside before it began.
